Not getting rid of me just yet.....
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:00:36 am »
Well chaps, I've not gone just yet, and judging my the news I've just heard, won't be for a while yet

The build time on my new Rocco and now been estimated as approx 20-25 weeks (upto 6 months)  :surprised:

Dealers are blaming VW, they said no one has much new stock at the moment and what is there is being shuffled from dealer to dealer, and it's really starting to affect UK dealers (can't speak for the rest of Europe).

Apparently, this is all due to a number of factors :

1. VW dramatically cut back on production across all it's models and plants when the recession hit, so they are still clearing back logs.

2. The Scirocco is classed as a niche car and so gets affected more than say a Golf.

3. Shortage in supply of DSG gearboxes.

4. A new ordering system that was implmented at the back of last year screwed up thousands of orders acorss europe and these are still being mopped up.

5. Dealers only have a limited ordering allocation, and when they have used theirs up, they are not allowed to order anymore until a new allocation is released.

It does make me smile that as one of the worlds top 3 car manufacturers, that the situation is so bad. Of course the above could all be dealer boll*ks, but who cares, it's not like it's going to make any difference.

The dealer has promised to honor the PX price on the Golf and give me a guarantee it won't cost any more so at least I should be grateful for that. Guess I'll just bide my time and look forward to a Rocco in the Summer rather than spring. I can wait, and I suppose it maintains a little more exclusivity on the Rocco.

Afterall, it's not like I'm drving a shed at the moment, love the Golf and it will be a pleasure to take it into a new summer.

Cheers
Andrew

Didn't want to piss on your chips in the other thread but VW are a mess at the minute. On the other hand if you want a new Passat there's only a two week wait!!  :surprised:

Is the shortage of DSG boxes because they have to replace so many under warranty?

As you said Maxitrol, I don't really mind as the Golf's a great car anyway, so I can wait.

Simon, I hope you were joking  :surprised:

Only half joking. I'm sure I read somewhere that DSG is no longer an option in  the US due to the failure rate and consumer unrest, but I don't believe everything I read on t'internet!

Pretty sure they get an extended gearbox warranty over there, though.

keep an eye out for offers on Rocco's while you wait for yours.. In the 12 week wait I had for my GTi the leather upholstery option became a FREE option.I took this up with my dealer, told him I would have specified leather if it was,nt for the price. He knocked me £900 off..

There is a huge thread on the Rocco forum where people have been waiting ages for their car, prepare for a long wait, its not something i could stomach though.

What's also causing delays for new car deliveries is that other markets are more profitable at the moment, so manufacturers are cutting UK supplies to ship elsewhere at greater profit. Plus most markets are LHD hence easier to supply. I wonder what the lead time on your 'Roc would be if you ordered a RHD from a European dealer, Andrew?

I take all your points on board, and generally agree. I don't think I will be seeing the car any time before 20 weeks (if I do it's a bonus), and yes we probably get screwed here in the UK because of the RHD thing.

Thing is though, last weekend I was planning on keeping the Golf for another year (until just before it's Seventh birthday), so keeping it for another 5-6 months is not an issue for me. Also, because we know the dealer well (and have bought cars from him before), we have had to pay £0 deposit for the Rocco AND a new Polo DSG that we ordered for the wife at the same time, so it's not as though they have my money for 6 months.

They have also given me the run for a week of the brand managers 2.0TDI GT DSG (almost similar spec to what I have ordered) to see if I really like it, and have said at any time up to collection point, I can cancel (as they know they can sell it at a drop of a hat), with no money from me. So the way I see it, it's a win/win situation.

i believe dsg is still an option but there was a recall which effected almost 70,000 cars in the usa... vw uk deny any problems...

really liking the rocco though  :happy2: but a 6 month wait you should have snapped up dave's with the omnaynts

Well, it sounds like you have a good dealer there. There's no grumbling with those terms. Excellent customer service & makes the wait worthwhile.

 Hmmm.....the plot thickens.

Having read for the last couple of days about massive issues with delivery and to expect a delivery on the Rocco of about 20-25 weeks, I've just a call from the dealer before I left work tonight.

Bearing in mind I only ordered it on Sunday, which means VW only saw it on Monday, the order has been accepted and approved by VW Germany and a build date issued of Week 10. Dealers says to expect the car for collection around week 14 (or slightly earlier maybe).

Also had an approval and acceptance on the wifes Polo and a build date of week 12 so been told to expect that one around week 16ish.

I know it doesn't mean anything until the car turns up, but he rang me with this information, so we'll have to see what happens. Fingers crossed  :happy2:

its VAg wide i think mate.  Mine vRS has a 10week delay just to get built, then a further 4-5 weeks for delivery to UK.

If its diesel then you can add another 20 weeks to the order.  From what i gather theyare trying to persuade guys to go [petrol to help clear the back logs

DSG has always been in short supply. When the MkV GTI came out, there was an 8-month wait time on DSG-equipped cars. It's a complex unit to manufacture and its production is shared amongst all VW group.

Only half joking. I'm sure I read somewhere that DSG is no longer an option in  the US due to the failure rate and consumer unrest, but I don't believe everything I read on t'internet!

Nonsense. DSG is still an option in the US, on both VW and Audi models. The recall (which affected almost all US DSG boxes) was due (IIRC) to a TSB on temperature probes, but I might be confusing this with something else. There was some talk of a class-action lawsuit against VW over something DSG-related, but I don't recall the details. The end result was in the extended gearbox warranty.
