MK5 mileage advice

I had been hoping to get a low mileage GTI here in Northern Ireland but it looks like most are around the 50,000 miles mark. How much would I have to invest in this over the next few years. Obviously I would have to check the timing belt was changed but are there any issues to watch out for that could be costly to repair?

50k miles is nothing for a VeeDub! Mine's done 90k miles and feels the same as she did at 40k miles  :notworthy:

Check the Handbook stamps and paperwork to make sure regularly serviced and by whom. Things like DSG service, brake fluid, plugs, cambelt. I've had 2 coilpack units fail (one yesterday) but cheap and easy to replace.

If you find a car you are serious about, pay the AA (if in Ireland) £50 to formally inspect - They're extremely thorough.

VWR did it for me - It happened when I slightly over-rev'd while playing with a S3. I'm not going to be shifting down 2 gears at once any more! I was only about 20 miles away en route to VWR fortunately.

Good to see another N.Ireland member  :happy2:

I had to wait for about 3 months for one with low miles in my price range, and thankfully it had one OCD previous owner!
Remember low miles doesn't always mean better condition though!

Wayne D and Lyons of this forum are both selling very tidy examples and are in NI, worth a look!

Would love ED30 but practicality is something I have have so preferably a 5 door. If you know of anyone. I'm very, very wary of handing over a sum of over £11,000. Only ever owned one car and that was bought from dealer with some reassurances. Any advice on buying privately would be much appreciated. Ideally I would like to take the car to a mechanic I know to give it the once over.

Also, what do you think the chance are that more GTI's will come onto the market with my criteria over the coming months due to rising fuel prices and the normal trends of selling up?

Here are my ideal criteria (perfect car would be ED30 five door, but hey)
5 door
red or black
up to 40,000
late 2007 - 2008 registered
heated seats(not really a necessity)

That' about it and obviously a good price.

Thanks for any help as there are few members from NI here. Have been chatting to Lyons on the forum before.

My GTI was the first car that I bought privately. I was also a little unsure of spending all of my hard earned privately!
But Mkv GTI's seem to be fairly robust overall! Just do all the usual things when purchasing any car, privately or not. Alot of the ones I had looked at were on the long life service plan (serviced every 18k miles approx), but the one I bought had been serviced every 9 to 10k using the longlife oil. But generally just make sure it has a full service history and that the cam belt has been changed if there is more than 40k on it. Or negotiate that into the price (as I did).

If you have the money, definitely stretch for the ED30! I didn't but the standard GTI is still fantastic!

I recently bought one with 98K and drives great, like my old ED30 which had 7k (missed sorely!)

really no probs purchasing privately - have done with my last 3 cars (2 off of forums) and no problems whatsoever with the correct checks and precautions.
