Sorry this isn't a gti but my gt tdi 2.0..
The emissions workshop message has appeared on the mfd but the engine light should also be on.
I scanned it and this was the intake flap seizing.
I thought mine was just different but when I turn the key in the ignition sequence most lights come on but the engine light doesn't come on at all.
I think either
A) it has Been driving with the light on for ages till it burnt out.
B) bought it from a dodgy dealer?
Any ideas please
Thanks

The indicator lamps on the Mk5 are all LED. They have lifespans in the region of 10,000+ hours. Pretty much no possibility for it to be "burnt out" (that's not how LEDs work) but it's possible it never worked in the first place (but then again, I imagine factory quality control would have picked up a thing like that).

What's the best way to go from here.

Someone needs to plug vagcom in to check if the led works you can activate it to see if the led works. But from then I'm not sure it does need to work though by law your right there. There could be a problem with te circuit board in the cluster. There are a few boffins on here who will sort you out on this...

Well I bought it with emissions workshop message so I'm pretty sure someone Took the bulb out so only the message comes on and not the light.
I have vagcom btw, any idea how to check the LEDs via vagcom?

Again, can't take the "bulb" out - the LED will be soldered to the circuit board.

x2 on the VCDS but best wait for a vagcom experte to show up here and tell you what to do...

IIRC select the instrument cluster in VCDS - you will then be able to run the self test, this checked all LED's and does a sweep test of the dials.

Ok im really annoyed now i think it has been tampered with..
Here is a pic all the lights come on and go off as expected except the CEL light.
Im sure this has been tampered with or a big big co incidence
Can i check the LED on vagcom or do i have to remove the cluster to check
Im sure the led or wiring has been fiddled with
Thanks guys

Im not sure you could really and i think it would be a lot of effort to have it tampered with to stop the light coming on... and unless there is a hugely expensive item gone wrong one the car for the light to be on then it wouldn't be worth having it tampered with.... so you need someone on here who knows if the led for it can be turned off but i can't see that. i think its more likely that its just a huge coincidence but there is a problem with the cluster it can happen...

When you say you had a fault code did it say MIL ON??  Not all fault codes will illuminate the CEL.

I thought the glow plug light on a diesel was the 'check engine' light of a petrol?

ub7rm:
no there is check engine for diesel and EPC for petrol
The engine light should be under the glow plug light and above the red steering mechanism

vRStu: I know but the engine light doesnt even come on at startup

Ok. When i bought the car the exhaust emission light was on in VAGCOM ONLY because of the egr and imf flap.
But the light doesnt work in reality.
Im gonna check it once and for all tomorrow. im sure it had some  black tape over it or something
When i remove the cluster cover can i just lift the dials off the board to reveal the leds without removing the needles?
thanks
