VCDS > Instrument Cluster > Output Tests

Thats how you test the cluster

VCDS Scanning/Coding, RNS and MDI retrofits, and specialist mechanics services with VAGtek available - Just PM me for details.

I asked a mate in the trade about this he said simples to disable any particular led to remove an "expensive" warning light, probably not a good idea to tell everyone on an open forum but it is a 2 second job with the cluster out and hey presto your led doesn't function anymore...................

good luck but sounds like someone had done this prior to selling it!!

Since you have scanned this with VCDS and the only error you have was fixed by the flap and so there is clearly no reason why someone would have disabled the LED I'm not so sure why you are worrying.  Most things are displayed on the screen as well as the light and you obviously have vagcom to check for error codes.

Highline TDI clusters are also reletively cheap on ebay so if it worries you maybe buy a replacement and get it installed.

I agree it is possible if you are determined and it might be worth the OP removing the cluster to check for signs of opening.

Rich the intake flap triggers the light so what a co incidence that that light doesnt work. Im not worrying, just wondering if they did.
when i pull the cluster out it wont fit through that gap and it wont come out even when the steering is low- any ideas

ALSO
The rev counter needle isnt on ZERO like the other needles (as seen in the picture in the first page) and you need to remove the needle to remove the dial.

Ok just as i thought ill let the pics do the talking

Tissue covering the light

The culprit

Car with the light on

So basically there are two faults triggering the light. Imf and egr. I changed intake manifold flap.
Now the only error is egr ill change that soon too.

Should i speak the to private dealer i bought it off. Its been 3 months since i bought it
Its not a major fault i dont know why they would do it. I know its not major but it still doesnt feel good spending money and finding this out.

That's terrible!  I imagine its not a nice experience, surely the fault was still showing up in the display and via VCDS even though the bulb was covered?  Glad you got to the bottom of it I would be tempted to have a word with them see if they will provide any good will but I guess it will be impossible to tell if its them or whoever sold it too them that made that helpful modification!

  • The voice of objective reason, but mine's best.
Sadly I doubt you can prove who put it there, could have been the person the 'private dealer'* bought it off?

I'd still report it to trading standards though, just in case there's a load of people making similar complaints against said chap and it'll support a case.

*Can you define this? Someone selling from their house, are they VAT registered??
Sideways yo!

I bought it from these guys

Maybe not them, could be the person who traded it in, who knows.
thanks for everything guys

Thats shocking that is. Reminds me of a customer I had in on their polo, where someone had filled the ABS light hole up so you couldnt see the ABS wasnt working  :fighting:

It looks like a fully fledged independent and I would certainly take it up with them you havent really got anything to loose even if they offer to do the corrective work at cost.  If they wont help then I would take the car else where in case their mechs solution is another piece of tissue!  :scared:

That's shocking! But glad you got it sorted... so is the led still working?

I'd say you haven;t really got any proof whether it was dealer or person who sold to dealer, but still would be worth mentioning to TS...
