'Engine Fault Workshop'!!
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:41:47 am »
Happened first last week Thurs, and then again this morning.

I get 'Engine Fault Workshop' flash up on the dash, literally for a second, before it goes again.

Car drives perfectly fine (Golf Diesel) otherwise - havent noticed any issues whatsoever with the drive.

Anyone know what this could point to?

Car is still under warranty, so if I took it in should I expect a free diagnostic check and fix?

Happened again on my way home - again only flashes up for a second, but this time a little coil/spring light on the dash also popped up and then went away again!

Is this indicating spark plugs??

You need to get it scanned with VCDS. If that has flashed on the dash then there should be a fault code logged.

It could be any number of reasons - DPF regen, Glow plugs etc. It could even be something as simple as a loose connection.

We would only be hazarding a guess though and a scan will help narrow things down.

Ok cheers - I have it booked in with VW on Thurs - just hope it doesnt clonk out by then!!

VW did say that if it just flashes up and goes, it isnt always written into the logs though?? So they may not get anything from it?

Is yours a 170 or 140? The 140 didn't come with a DPF.

In to the dealers tomorrow for a diagnostic check.
They told me it takes a few hours to get the results?! Is that correct?
I thought it would be a few mins to see if there were any fault codes etc???!

Fault codes yes but to confirm on a part maybe depending on what the code says... as a fault code is never a 100% thats the problem. Fault codes are just to point you in the right direction...

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but is this for definate?? I only ask as I have seen a couple of ad's which state GT140 DPF, I know Autotrader have a certain amount of generic titles and someone who doesn't realise may select it by accident when selling their car!

His: MK2 Black Magic Skoda Octavia vRS Estate
Hers: MK5 Graphite Blue Pearl VW Golf GT140 -

Yes except on the Mk6, they are all DPF. Only the Mk5 170 has a DPF, check out uk-mkivs where there's lots of info on diesels.

Some Skoda Octavia's with the PD140 Engine have a DPF. The Octavia Scout does for definate.

Can't see why VAG would just give that engine to Skoda only. I think you would need to confirm with the Engine code

Sorry I should clarify, this only applies to the Golf. Mk5 Golfs only really came with DPF in 170 form.

Some reading:

Sorry Nasir I didnt see your question above!
Its a Golf Diesel Bluemotion 1.9.

Although the 'Engine Fault Workshop' message only pops up randomly after every few days, and only lasts a second, along with the engine and glow plugs light, Ive also noticed that the car is taking MUCH longer to get to temperature. I can drive for a good 20 mins or more before the car oil gets to normal temperature. The car also seems a little more sluggish to drive then normal (not that its the quickest car in the world in the first place).

What would cause the oil to heat up slower?? Could it be the glow plugs??

It could be a whole host of things, faulty thermostat for example. If it is booked in with a dealers then i would wait and see what they say mate

They found a code - didnt tell me what it was though. All they said was its an issue with the wiring and they need the car back in for a day or two to investigate further to find out exactly what it is.
Need to wait until the 8th until they can get me a car to loan, so hopefully it'll be OK untill then!

Any possibility of them giving me a Golf R on loan
