Retro fitting highline/MFSW/RNS advice

I'm currently looking to buy an 05 1.9 Tdi SE for work purposes, and would be keen to upgrade the interior gadgets.

My wish list would include RNS 510, MDI, Highline and MFSW.

I had a Ver A RNS in my Gti with 1100 firmware as this escaped the battery drain issues, I assume I'd be safer sticking with the same again?

For the Highline, do I need to get clocks from a pre 07 car, or is it only an issue the other way round when the car is post 07? Ideally I would take the steering wheel and display from an 07 Match, but just wondered if it would conflict with my earlier car.

I assume a new control module is required for the MFSW?

Could anyone give me a rough (I appreciate second hand prices vary) of everything above and any other controllers etc that's needed to get it all working?

Finally, my mum has the USB/iPod lead in her new Polo SEL running from the RCD310. She will never have a need for the iPod lead as I don't think she even knows what one is, could I poach it from her car to put
with the RNS? I'm assuming it's the MDI that comes in the Polo?

Not sure about the MDI but there were a couple of threads whih told you exactly which highline dash to go for (there are several different serial numbers and not all of them will work). The steering wheel control module also depends on which version you have. Might be worth doing a search. If I find the threads, will post them up.

If you want to D.I.Y or make it easy the car and the highline both need to be pre 2006.

Thats highline part numbers ending in 970,971,972 and current midline ending in 960,961 and 962. These part numbers are interchangable you can fit a 971 in a 962 car likewise a 972 in a 960 car ect. You can fit later/new highlines but you will need to go to the dealer or specialist to get this done at a cost of around £350-£400. If you want to D.I.Y then you can pick them up second hand for between £40-£200. Although if you choose this option then you'll need or find someone with the right software aswell as VCDS to do the swap (unless you manage to find a highline which is supplied with the security code).Darren(Mortygttdi) Eddie (EddieNL) and I all have this software aswell as others.

For the multifunction wheel then you'll need a new controller and airbag loom and possibly slip ring although if the car has a midline display as oppose to a lowline display you should have the correct one (slip ring). New controller around £130 from the dealers to £40-£80 second hand, Loom £35 from the dealers around £20 secondhand.Again you'll need VCDS or someone with it to code it for you.

Also just to add if you use a highline ending in 972 then the MFSW will need to be the later model with the menu button. If its 970,971 then the older MFSW will be needed.

The dash insert part number is 1K0 920 followed by the three numbers mentioned above.

As for the MDI Im sure they are all the same but you would have to confirm that as Im not 100% sure.

It could be hard to source a pre 07 highline sadly. At least all Match's cane with it but they're 07 and therefore bot compatable.

My only concern is I fear I don't know anyone here in NI that would have the extra software required for highline coding. I suppose a dealer would do it?

Can you still get most of the benefits of highline without a MFSW? I may add it later just.

I'm sure I'll have more questions when the time comes!

You can use a highline from any diesel car pre mid 2006, even a Jetta.

You can even use a petrol cluster but the rev range will obviously be out as it wont rev to the red line.

You can get them quite easily on ebay.de but they usually go for 150€-180€

Yes you can still use the highline without MFSW, you just use the wiper stalk controls. To be honest it does look better but it only really becomes worth having when you have sat nav and phone connected IMO.
