Im enjoying it more than the rocco right now.....

....Really? - That doesn't say much for the Rocco  :surprised:
I don't think thats what he meens.  I know exactly what he meens though as i often run old bangers, currently over the winter its a daihatsu. The mundaino is a car he can leave anywere and not worry about it. Its a car he does not have to dodge every pebble, pothole, kerb with or worry about speed bumps, other motorists quality driving and parking with. The list goes on and on etc, etc.

im enjoying my mk4 R alot more than my gti, its alot more practical for everyday driving and i dont get the usual chav scum saying 'nice car mate, its not as quick as my mates m3 though'

im currently looking for a mk4 tdi for a run around for the misses, 50mpg, decent performance, comfey, her beetle 2.0 auto is gash!! im sure my r32 does more mpg that that piece of junk!

its not hitting everyone... brand new gt2 rs drove past me this morning as I walked to clapham junction station - frosted grey colour with exposed carbon fibre bonnet

chap looked like he was enjoying driving it despite the crators in the road he was weaving around  :happy2:

....Exactly. Recession never does hit everyone. Mortgage rates etc etc are constantly fluctuating anyway and never worth losing any sleep over. You won't suddenly see a traffic jam of diseasals on London's Park Lane. Someone my age in the UK will have experienced several economic recessions.

I'm in my mid 40's now...doh! but it's a time in most people's lives if you have a big mortgage kids etc that things are tight. I work for the goverment and although I get paid well above the national average owning a new car or nearly new 25-30k is a retirement aspiration right now.
It seems that if you are living at home with parents as getting on the property ladder is nigh on impossible right now are factors that many people by 20k+ cars.

I used to work in the south east where people are either paid a load more or their are many highly paid private sector jobs which enable Porsche and high end BMW ownership but for the majority of people I know and meet the recession is really biting. My local VAG dealership echoes the same issues of tightening of credit for young people unlike 5 years ago.

People are far more wary about borrowing in any case.

I wonder how many people in the private sector (excluding directors/managerial positions) earn over £45-£50K these days?

The local hourly rate in one of the main employers in my area of Somerset is £7.42 per hour. If your earning over £10 per hour your considered as doing well. Certainly it is poorly paid but people are greatful to be in a job and manage to pay their mortgages on their average 3 bed semi's. Most drive older cars (mostly diesel!) and there seems to be few expensive new cars with many as previously mentioned that sell their financed cars to pay off debt....a big change from a few yeras ago.

Plenty of people in private sector IT still earning that kind of money, even outside the South East.

Recession hasn't hit me or the missus (she's a Medic, nothing changes there), in fact I think we've done better out of it*. Mortgage came down, anything we wanted to buy suddenly became cheaper in the never ending desperation sales, we got £20k's worth of building work/new kitchen at 15%VAT done... little things, but they count. - but then our only outgoings are relatively small, the house only has a 50% mortgage and we've got no kids. If you've got disposable income at the minute, you can command a lot of power.

I also broke my own rule of never borrowing to own a car too recently, I always save and own outright. Such was the desperation of dealers to sell, even in these crap times I was able to get more of a return investing the savings for the car than I'm spending on interest buying it... so why use my own money?

The 330d problem? It's a relatively expensive BMW with (wrongly) perceived high running costs. They're company car fodder, not many people are buying them privately for the family as you say - they look at a 320d or older car and see it ticking 9/10 boxes and the price/running costs swing it. I bet it'd have been sold in a week if it'd been a 320d??

Hot hatches and other things associated with younger people are pretty strong, as I think they're resigning themselves to the fact they can't own a house so spunk the savings instead and stay at home??

Lastly, it's post Xmas and middle England is still feeling the pinch and wary of spending... give it a few months, clear the cards and the prospect of summer will loosen people up.

i don't think its so much about salaries but more about the fact that credit is not so easy to come by these days, hence people are no longer able to surive on debt like many have done for years in the past.

the government is having to cut its coat according to its cloth after a decade of frivolous spending and now its time for those who have done the same to follow suit

True, people have lived by borrowing for so long, they've forgotten how to deal with real life and have panicked. There's a lot to be said for people talking themselves into a bad situation.

Having said that the best way back into recession is for everybody to curl up into hedgehog mode and not buy anything - something which I'm conscious Im actually doing.

Im on a base +.75 tracker and they wont release any more funds on that deal so to get another few grand to finish the house off would triple my monthly payments. So everything is done out of salary slowly with visits to currys/comet/pc world/the apple shop rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

I'm almost willing my old 1st generation 32" flatscreen to blow up so I can go and get another one......
