Thoughts on treadwear ratings
« on: February 02, 2011, 02:45:35 pm »
Right,

I know that treadwear indexes isn't interchangable between tyre brands.
Last summer i had the Toyo R1r in 18" tyres fitted to my car

and they had a treadwear of 140, excellent tyre with max amount of grip. This season i wanted to use the 19" rims

i bought last spring so i needed new tyres for them. First i looked at the Toyo Proxes T1 Sport with a treadwear of 180

A guy i know has them on his mk 4 R32 and are very pleased with them.

Then i read about the new Michelins on here and thought that the Michelin PS2 and 3 got really good reviews of you guys but i wanted more grip than they IMO could provide and looked at the Pilot cup tyres, at app. 280euros i found them to expensive and besides they only have 5mm tread from factory so some pretty expensive mileage in them. The new super sport as the name states should imo be located between the PS3 and the pilot cup with normal tread depth and more grip than the PS3. I ordered the tyres and have just picked my wheels up today after having the tyres fitted. As i wanted to take some shots for you guys i noticed the Super sports treadwear rating

As i'm not familiar to the Michelin index can any of you guys tell me the treadwear rating of your PS2, PS3 and Pilot cups??

Discussion please

PS Cup treadwear 80 & 5mm new
PS2 treadwear 220 iirc.

Surprised the SS is 300 though, given their sales pitch.

With a rate of 300 i expect to use these for 5 years  :rolleye: as i now has a set for summer (super sport), track (Toyo R1R) and winter (Vredestein Wintrac extreme 300km/h rated  )

Cups are amazing, and unlike most others you can fully rotate them, but as for using them on the road - hmm.....maybe not.

Be interesting to here your thoughts on the SSs though when you try them properly.  :happy2:

plenty of porkers rolling around with ps cups on the road but I wouldn't fancy it myself this time of the year given they need a bit of heat in them to be work properly

as for these supersports all the info claims they provide more grip and last longer than the ps2 - so I would not be concenrned about the treadwear rating

now get them on and let us know what they are like  :drinking:
GTI Edition 30 - Reflex Silver now gone but not forgotten - Cooper S JCW now.

Yep, I think my assym F1s were 280 and they lasted fewer miles than the PS2s.

Cups aren't too bad on the road during iffy weather, certainly better than the Parada Spec 2s I had for about a fortnight!! You just can't help feeling you can hear the money peeling off them as you drive!! That said, I got a lot of track days out of them, and they were part worn when I got them.
