I'm on turbo number 3,  I don't think the turbo is well matched with this engine and could do with a bigger one so its not has stressed.

I changed my last one before it went pop, I could hear the load siren type noise :scared: and didn't want it going while the wife was driving.

Hope it gets sorted quickly mate :happy2:

This is the only thing stopping me getting mine mapped. I hardy use the car as it is and wouldnt really see the benefit.

Did you fit the new turbos yourself Darren?

I'm fairly certain it's related to servicing regime.  I don't think the PD140's particularly enjoy long life servicing.

SEAT don't do it on the LEON 140's they are fixed to 10k.

No I got my local garage to do it, the owner used to work on Fords Rally works cars so know whats what, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I think your right Stu mine was on long life when I bought and I put it on fixed servicing just after the turbo was changed and its been fine since.

Early cars came with a different spec turbo that later (mid 2006 on) cars. My turbo blew on my pd140 with just 13k on a 100% standard engine, no map or anything.

Dont buy cheap recon turbos, often the shaft is sub standard quality, and make sure the new turbo is a Garrett one, not a KKK one.

Dont let turbos put you off mapping, my PD140 lasted from 15k to 55k on a standard garrett turbo making 320ft/lb and 188bhp.

This is all encouraging.

My 140 has always been on the 10k service since new and only done 60k mostly motorway.

I was thinking of giving AMD a visit to have a chat about it.

2 years ago mine i had a map put on by awesome..but i went back down to them to tweak the map a bit..Geoff who used to do the maps thier said to me your turbo is whistleing a bit and could blow on the rollers.
I said noo its been like that for ages..but the turbo blew on the rollers like he said it would, they put a Garret on mine from turbo dynamics and cost me £1100 and a lot of earache of the misses as she had to do 300 mile round trip to get me :signLOL:
The turbo wasn't Awesomes fault for going bang it was mine

This is now worrying me.......I have a 2004 GT TDi. Full VW service history but well out of warranty. Done 80k now. Should I really look at taking this to a professional turbo place to have it checked/serviced? cause if mine goes, there is now way I can afford a 3k bill :(

The turbo's on the PD140's are very hit and miss!
I took mine to VW for some work and while it was there they said the turbo was too noisy and changed it under warranty at approx 65k (it'd had the well known owl hoot/whistle for the previous 10k)
Approx 1k miles later it's now back to whistling like before and I've been doing 5/6k mile oil and filter changes

MY gt tdi has started giving me limp mode when flooring it uphill and im getting worried
Heard its usually the vanes sticking due to carbon build up so im gonna get it stripped and cleaned
Surely vw should have made better turbos than this

VW don't make the turbo's, Garrett do... If it's a problem with the turbo or a problem with how VW have installed them I'm not sure. I would guess it's a combination of the two

A quick fix is to remove the actuator mounting bolts and work the vnt mechanism manually by pushing the actuator assembly up and down about 50 times, making sure you get the full sweep of the vnt. The first few will cycles will crunch, it will then loosen up.

How long will VW normal hold a warranty on the turbo?

are these turbo's going due to a manufacturing fault?
