1 series against Mk5 Gti
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:11:47 pm »
I have the Mk5 Gti up for sale however it looks like I might be able to keep it.  Saying that I did start looking at other cars and for the same money I could have a 120d.  Now I dont need a huge amount of space but it must be 5dr and I am doing a bit more miles than I thought.  The BM would save me £850+ a year on fuel costs.

Anyone owned both that can give a good review on what they are like to live with compared to the Mk5 Gti.  The RWD appeals to me as well.

I've had 2 mk5 GTI's and have the S3 at the minute, but the misses has a 1 series which I drive every other day. They are similar sized cars but drive very differently, the steering on the 1 series has more feel and is more direct, I put this down to the fact that the front wheels just steer and nothing else but the 1 series ride can be a bit choppy and I find it more effected by side winds, but I do really like it and enjoy driving it.

Then again I love driving the S3 and would have another mk5 GTI in a sniff, in fact I drove my mates stg 2 GTI a couple of months back and really enjoyed it but lost a mirror in action :ashamed:

Thanks, I dont need an out an out fun car as I have Corrado VR6 as a toy.  The Mk5 is a daily car that will never get above 50mph during the week if Im honest.  I do love it but I just fancy a non VAG car as Ive been driving them since I passed my test in 1995.  The BM's seem to get a really good write up and I dont need too much space so the smaller boot and rear space doesnt bother me.  Had any problems with yours?

we did have an issue with a recuring engine fault light which turned out to be an aftermarket oxygen sensor that had been fitted prior to us buying it, once a BMW one had been fitted it cleared and hasn't returned. Ours is a 3dr and I have been genuinely suprised how much stuff we can get in the back of it with seats folded down
Oh and without winter tyres they are shocking in the snow, we fitted some this year and it was funny watchin peoples reaction as you drive past them going up hills when they are stuck

Winters are a must for me on all my cars now so thats not a problem.  Good excuse to get some bling summer wheels as well.

I had a ed30 for 2years and now have a 1series albeit the coupe but pretty much the same car i think...

I went for the 123d as I still wanted some performance but really needed reasonable fuel economy. Its similar performance to a GTI but i get 41mpg as a average and I spank it everywhere, so would expect you to get a fair bit more not exceeding 50.

I love my BMW. The golf was faster but that was the only thing that I can think of as a plus, oh and the dsg which was awesome at times.

I cant speak for the hatch but my boot is huge surprisingly. And I think a M Sport is a must, they just look so much better and have nice little touches ...  And as said winter tyres are the nuts  :happy2:

Well I drove a 120d this afternoon and wasnt overly impressed TBH after reading the reviews.  It must mask the speed as it felt farily gutless.  The golf feels a lot better and considerably quicker.  Fuel economy is the only plus side.  It was nice just not sure I would want to swap the Golf for it.

suprised by that mate, I'd try another incase there was an issue with the one you drove. I test drove a 120D before we bought the misses this one and was suprised at how well it went

I dont think it was slow, just felt slow and a bit bland.  I think Im really just not a diesel man at heart.  Will maybe try another but it would need to be a bargin for me to change I think.

I too am thinking of replacing my CW Ed30 for a BMW 123d M Sport Coupe. Problem is most used examples start around the £19-23k bracket and I really only have my Ed30 plus a few grand I could 'borrow'.

So, how much do you think I could get for mine:-

CW, 2008 (May 08), 22200 miles, RNS510 Sat Nav, Cruise, window tints, armrest plus all the standard Ed30 stuff.
I'm the second owner. Just been treated by Miglior (JayC) on here so is gleaming.

Would I really regret the changeover, which is only really necessary to achieve cheaper road tax and better mpg?
VW Golf Edition 30, Candy White, 3dr Manual. Plus a stunning Aston Martin V12 Vantage!
