Tried to Programme New Key Vehicle now in SAFE mode

Hi all,

Dont Know if anyone can help...

My Dad has a VW Touran 2009 and he only had one Key when he bought it, so I bought a spare key off Ebay with a blank blade, had the blade cut and then took it to a mate a who works for VW to programme it to the car on their computer. Whilst he was trying to programme it the vehicle went into safe mode and wouldnt start with either Key... After a while he managed to get the car started with the original Key but the car still has SAFE on the dash where the mileage is. His mate said that it was because the Key was not purchased from VW but didnt know how to fix it?

Does anyone have a solution for getting the SAFE off the dash?

I do know the keys are brand specific but not sure on the safe thing.  Sounds odd that a franchised dealer, presumably with VAS and a link to the factory couldn't clear the dash.

Speaking to another mate who has a VW specialist garage so has the comp but obviously not the ones the dealers have he was also unsure about the safe mode, he pressumed that the car thinks that the car should have2 keys programmed but only one is programmed because the other is unable to pair but he was unsure of a solution... he suggested the vw dealer should be able to tell the car it only has one key and delete the info of the other key...

Yep I think that would be a short term solution and then a buy a new key, from a dealer, and have it coded.

Thanks Stu, You know alot about the vag com etc do you think that what he is suggesting should be something our mate at vw should be able to do then?

These days, unless you either have the SKC or have access to the equipment to extract then VW are the only people that can do it.  Even the Tech's don't see the SKC anymore.

I would probably bin the eBay key fob and buy a new, VW, one you should be ok with the blade and have it coded at the same time as deleting the other key.

I seem to recall the car will 'lock' if too many failed attempts have happened but I think it is only a time delay to stop you doing it at the time.  VCDS/VAS can display the waiting time - Look in 17 Instruments, Measuring Blocks 08 and select Block 24.  Each of the three fields must be at zero before turning off the ignition.

How long has the ignition been on since the problem occurred?  

You can also check the suitability of a key by reading Block 22, the third field must read 1 if the fob can be used.

There is also a prerequisite of having an adequate battery voltage, if he had lots of attempts he may have lowered the battery voltage.

This has happend to me before....with a genuine key, you don't have to tell it that there is only one key, the 50/51 does it all, sometimes you may have to wait for 5 mins as it may be protected but this on the big stuff.
It happend other day on a new rocco, changed the key remote with a new one and it adapted fine
