I'm no expert but certainly my first thought is that its the LED thats failed.  They do normally have a very long life expectancy but you get duff ones just like everything else.

I would imagine its repairable only if you have a steady hand and are good with a soldering iron.  That sort of thing would bug me too.  Look at it as a good excuse to get and RNS510.

I had the same problem too.
There are four(4) leds for the button.
The problem seems to be with the circuit board which is on the faceplate.
I had a spare part backplane from my older CD version MFD2,
which I used to replace in my current DVD MFD2; and it worked fine.
So my advice is to get from ebay a spare faceplate only (ive seen some on ebay.de).
best of luck.

see here on how to dismantle the unit, its easy,
(thats from touareg mfd2, but its the same procedure, very similar unit, and torx screws).
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f43/diy-how-to-repair-an-rn-s2-dvd-a-k-a-mfd2-47720.html

I swapped the green backplate including the lcd screen.

here is an ebay one, 200 euro.

Note that ebay pictures show CD MFD2 version (different buttons).
It doesn't matter, as you can use your silver buttons and plastic face of unit when assembling.
CD unit backplane worked on my DVD unit.

hope that helps
