Looking back on the cost of fuel, I would have a diesel myself now, and it probably would be a high spec GT170

Ohh yeah i would never completely bash diesels.. i had a mapped 1.9tdi mk5 and it went well, it kept up with an Audi A5 1.8T (180PS).... but i had to have my petrol fix.  :driver:

what power are we talking of here carl.  Am i right in saying my lowly 1.4 will have more power than your remapped diseasal, despite being a homo's car?

Sy you should know by now that peak figures mean diddly squat on the roads. If you would like an education in Diseasel performance when you get the homomobile then by all means come round.  :booty:

Just give me plenty of warning so I can get my balaclava so no-one I know recognises me :P

Oh and my Power is Dyno Proven  :P

I'd go for the 170tdi, you'll say i'm biased cause I drive a diesel. But the tdi can be remapped easily to 200 and higher with the dpf removed. 170tsi hasn't shown great gains with maps from what i've read, reliability issues have arison. I have driven my cousins 170tsi and was impressed with the power from such a small engine.
But If you can stretch to a gti then do, different breed of animal. Otherwise as I said i'd opt for the oil burner. sure, off the line, the petrol is likely to hand it's arse to it but when they get going those 170tdi's going, they are no slouches,especially a remapped one,great torque. It's all about the torque with us diesel heads ha ha.

Pleased to see this has generated quite a few opinions!  I will probably be going for the diesel, the TSi was only an option as it gives me a wider choice of car, if I was looking at petrol it would have to be the GTi as I don't think I would ever be happy with the performance after driving the vRS.  Whereas I wouldn't expect as much from the TDi but hopefully would be pleasantly surprised. 
Unless a 170 comes along at the right price I will not being going down that avenue as I would rather not have to worry about the DPF, having it removed and remapping is an option but as it will be swmbo's car I think she would hand my b0ll0x to me on a plate if I did it!! :surprised:

My other half has a 2007 GT Tdi 170 and I have a 2007 Ed 30 GTi.

Whilst the diesel goes pretty well it's certainly is a very different drive to the Ed30, I think pulling high gears at motorway speeds and then accelerating they're pretty equal. When we run down to the SW there's a bit of the M5/A38 just past Exeter which is multi lane up quite a hill @ Haldon. Both cars up there in 6th are pretty equal and quite quick. (Clearly I could have dropped a gear to use more revs in the petrol but was interested to see what top gear uphill comparsion was like). I suppose peak torque figures are therefore not too far apart.
 
The 30 (in my view doesn't have much lag) - even less so since it was mapped but that's another posting - the TDi engine has lots of lag, at least the 2007 version does.
She now has her eye on a car change and the latest spec common rail 2.0 TDi (even in an A4 avant) is very smooth and pulls better from lower revs - but then doesn't hit hard when boost arrives like the '07 diesel does. Know it's hard to compare as there are different sized cars but that's how it felt.
I also find my GTi handles 'nicer'. Roundabouts have much more steering feel to them when compared to the diesel engined car.

Clearly it depends on the miles you do, as one car does go a lot further on each gallon of juice. Both are really great cars.
If it helps - if both cars are there which one do I use? The Ed30 everytime. Even going to the shops..

BTW Dunno about the term God's fuel, I always call the black pump stuff - the "Fuel of Satan"
