'product enhancement' (recall!) on some mk5 gti's
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:12:07 am »

Sorry if this has been posted before but I've only just found out!

Went to get some pictures taken for the paint warranty and was informed that as of yesterday they have a 'product enhancement', a recall in other words on mk5 gti's as the coilpacks are prone to failiure. And they've fitted four new coilpacks there and then.

Very helpful service.

Do you know what year(s) are effected?

So you are out of warranty and they can issue a Product Enhancement and you get 4 new coil packs.

Does anyone have any more information ? I have a 55 plate model year 06, if we can get something concrete on this I will be off to the dealers first thing monday morning!

I'm pretty sure someone else has posted that their 55 plate had the coils replaced when it was in for servicing under the same 'quiet recall'.  Interestingly of all the reports I've ever seen of GTI's catching fire all the cars affected were 55 plates and the coils were to blame.

There was another interesting post about the fire issue that linked the fires to recent engine bay cleaning activities that resulted in the coils getting wet / high resistance / melt / fire.

My 05 plate (04 MY) was in the stealers today for its MOT and they didn't mention anything but maybe thats because they didn't check ...

The coils on the 1.8T's used to fail all the time but VW never replaced them FOC out of warranty or issued any sort of quiet recall like this.  Then again on the 1.8T's they didn't catch fire either ... so either VW have come over all charitable or they know there is the potential for serious harm / serious bad publicity ala Toyota with these items.  Not that I'm cynical of course  :signLOL:

I've just had my MOT done at the dealers today as well and they replaced all 4 coilpacks too!
I was told when I booked my MOT that it was due some warranty work due to a product recall.
Actual invoice says:
Carry our Recall 28F5-W-Ignition Coil.
Parts fitted IGNIT.COIL
STICKER?

Mines a March 2007 Ed30.

Mine's a 06-build 05-plate Mk5 GTI and I've had 2 coilpacks fail so far. I wonder if VW will reimburse me.

I'm glad I have an Evoms engine cover to help keep out any water etc. You'd be surprised how much it gets splashed.

Same here had a major service at VW Wolverhampton and they said there was an outstanding recall and had replaced the coil pack. Mines an 05 plate.

Just found this on another VW site -

Surely the recall isn't dependent on having a service session?

No, I only went in for pictures to be taken of rust and they just told me about it and asked if I minded waiting while they changed them! Was surprised to say the least!

....Excellent! I have a good relationship with my VW dealer so I'll drop by. I always park at their place when I go into that town anyway.
