'product enhancement' (recall!) on some mk5 gti's

Mine got done today whilst having a service done, mines an 05 plate GTi.. only had 2 on the shelf but managed to get another 2 in so I didn't have to go back.. recall number 28F5 iirc

It might not be anything to do with the coilpacks but my car definatly feels more eager since it's had the recall done. New software maybe?

....My VW dealer says that they are instructed to inform customers if their software has been updated. Also, I think we'd probably already know about it here if an update had been released unless it literally had happened in the last 24hrs.

If someone can post a pic on here as to where to access the coilpacks we could all check our coilpacks part number to see if they are the ones that are the ones to be replaced , we can then tell VW that we need them replacing . Some VW Dealers don't know their *rse from their elbow .....I am away from the car for a few days so can't.........Having never looked into this type of engine ED30 is there a coilpack per cylinder?

....There is always one coilpack per cylinder. The coilpack provides the ignition to the spark plug and hence combustion.

The part number is printed, not raised/embossed, on the casing of the socket and not easy to read when old. Somehow I doubt that dealers will accept relying on you as the customer to tell them what they need to order. An exception might be if you personally know the Parts Manager very well and he knows he can trust you to get it right.

....Ah yes, I remember such single coils with the leads well. They looked rather biological when removed. We used to remove them as a quick way to disable a car.

Rang my dealer this morn to ask if they had the coilpacks in stock, Was informed the had 1, Not takin it back untill the have a set.
Good job i checked really otherwise would have been a wasted day.
Id advise everyone else to do the same.

had mine done yesterday couldnt pick it up today due to them only having 3 coilpacks in stock and not checking before hand, drove away and i get warning light, take it back and they hadnt connected some leads properly - usless muppets lol

also they did a saftey check, and all they told me was i had not standard bulbs - its got a hid kit fitted and that my brake pads need replacing between 5-8000 miles - what kind of usless infomation is that?

Ill be making it very clear when mine goes in that they are to only check the coilpacks and replace if necessary and absolutely nothing else

Sorry for butting in with what may have been stated here, it's just I can't look through the 10's of pages looking for the answer.

Does this affect only cars that were manufactured in certain years. Say I was to purchase a 2007 GTI will it be okay?

Since I may be purchasing from a dealer soon would I mention this before/during sale?..and what would they do?

After watching this thread from the start I called VW customer services to ask whether my car was affected by the recall.  I was told that the only recall relating to my car was for a software update in 2007 and this had been done at that time.  I explained the nature of the recall (coil pack replacement) and was advised that there are no recalls of that nature in operation.

Having seen the further information posted above on engine codes and unaffected coil pack numbers (very helpful - thanks!) I removed the engine cover last night and removed the coil pack loom connectors from each of the coils to gain access to the part numbers (on the coil pack body under the connectors).  All four coil packs are original with the part number 07K 905 715 and dated 06/05.

Armed with this information and the recall number (28F5) I've just visited my local dealer, Parkway VW, and asked their front desk guys.  After 15 minutes discussion with the service team they were able to confirm that my car (2005 2.0TFSI GTI DSG) is included in the recall.  Mine was the first enquiry they have had regarding this.

They checked stock of the relevant coil packs and advised that they did not have current stock.  They have created a job card for my car and will call me when they come in to arange a fitting appointment.

Just thought my experiences may help someone else.

It affects certain VINs between 2005-2007 (early 07 ie march)

If its coming from a dealer they should pick it up on PDI, but its always worth mentioning just in case

Just checked with Sinlair VW in Swansea and told mine doesn't need new coil packs. It a June 07 Ed 30 build no. 907. Will be checking the p/n's on the actual coil packs to be sure as I'm changing the plugs soon.

Rob....mine is build 851 and is 30/05/07.....no new coils required by mine either. Refering back to my earlier post had a 1991 BMW which had a coil per cylinder and a 1996 VR6 which only had one. Bmws have had them on every cylinder on petrols for some while , when did Vw get them and why so much later?

Yes, Parkway VW on Pride Park in Derby.  Hopefully it won't come as such a shock to them when you ask on Saturday!
