@ MAYO:

It's a VAG thing as far as I know.

Your dealer will remove your coils and inspect their part numbers.. Any older than a particular part # will be replaced free of charge and you'll go away a happy bunny and with Miss Coilette Placebo in your passenger seat.

looked at this string of posts and decided to call my local dealers (Kettering VW Northants) concerning the coil packs. Spoke to reception and stated that I have a 56 plate GTI and that I had seen that there was a recall on these items. After leaving me on hold for ages the receptionist came back and confirmed that there is a recall on the coil packs and promtley booked me in for an inspection next week. I'm not sure if they are going to replace them or not, but feel better that they are least going to look into it. Funny that without this forum I wouldn't have known about any so called "recall"...is this just a VW thing....?

A proper recall is when the manufacturer gets in touch with DVLA to get the details of all the owners of the cars affected and it is issued that way.  The coil pack replacement is a 'campaign' which will automatically flag up a car when it comes into the VAG service network.  A true recall is done when its something safety critical like sticking accelerator pedals etc.  A campaign is maybe important but not likely to immediately endanger life and limb.

VW may well issue a proper recall to mop up the people that don't go on forums or take their cars into VW to get servicing etc done once the majority of the easy to reach customers have been dealt with if this recall relates to a safety issue (cars catching fire).  I guess they look at the likely severity vs frequency to determine if its an issue worth of an all out recall or a campaign.

....Fortunately when my last coilpack failed, giving me an instant loss of power and only 3 cylnders on song, I was on dual carriageway when I was overtaking. Potentially coilpack failures could cause human fatalities but I can understand that as usual no-one ever does anything until after a catastrophe!

Not sure if this is something that they are planning to do or if she was just speculating  :rolleye:

I booked my 05 GTi in for a second key to be programmed at my local dealer here in Cornwall and the service guy said that my car had been flagged up on the system for coil packs  :happy2:

I'm quite pleased to be getting something for free already after buying the car from them 5 weeks ago. Its only done 32000 miles but i'm pretty sure i'd notice if there was a difference in the way it drives?? We'll see.

Was there a recall a while back for ecu updates or anything else for that matter that may or may not have been carried out on all mk5s?

Thanks!

Looking through my service history book theres a section right at the back "workshop comments" where they have stamped it with date and mileage and the product recall number 28fs
