A few questions about upgrading RCD500 to RCD510
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:28:23 pm »
Right, I've read through and seen about CAN gateways etc. No idea what mine is (55 plate)

Have the RCD500 6 CD jobbie. Sounds great especially as I seem to have the Soundpack.....garage I bought from didn't know  :rolleye:

Questions I have are:

1) Found and RCD510 though the bloke says no code - how can I get one, can I call VW and ask for the code or do I need the original vehicles details or just mine?
2) Does the RCD510 need a new CAN gateway? Seen that the RNS causes a battery drain if left for 36-48 hours though couldn;t see if the RCD510 does as well...
3) Also would this need coding using Vagcom or whatever it is? If so would the dealers charge the earth for this?
4) is the 510 much better than the 500?
5) As i have the soundpack do I need anyother connectors or is it the same iso connecter in the back?
6) Last one I promise........also have a iPod cable coming into my gloverbox - would this plug into the RCD510 as well?

Thanks gents

John

Actually found that the RCD510 would need an upgraded CN gateway....newer than K if mine is older which I assume it will be (55 plate)
Will need coding :(

Still need info on the keycode and connectors adaptors.

Thanks

Not sure about getting the code but everything else will fit ok.

I had the RCD500 in mine which I changed for a RNS510. I now have a RCD510 and had no problems fitting either of them.  I also changed my CAN Gateway thing when I got the RCD510 as it was an old one.  Got the new one from eBay and changed/coded it myself, didn't take very long

So you've got a cable and software for to code the stereo??

If so then I may need to pay you visit mate ;)

Had a cheeky bid on one on ebay as it had no bids.....think I was dreaming.

Yep, I've got a cable and software

The stereo is a straight swap and doesn't need any coding, but the CAN thing will if you change that.

Getting mine installed this Thursday, swapping an RCD300 for the RCD510. I'll let you know if I discover any new problems, but basically what others have said - its a straightforward job. I understand the sound quality is quite an improvement so looking forward to that.
