BBS Silver paint match?
« on: February 25, 2011, 01:50:46 pm »
I know there have been plenty of threads asking for the paint code or similar matches for Pescara silver/grey for touch ups but I need standard BBS shiny silver.
My local wheel refurbisher says BBS wheels are nearly impossible to match with his standard powdercoat colours, and I don't want a full refurb anyway as it's only light kerbing (cornish granite kerbstones, narrow roads, 35 profile tyres and vans that don't give way = two 300 mile old wheels kerbed).

The wheels are BBS CKs which look to be exactly the same shade as my previous VZ 033s and some ABT BBS wheels I had a few years ago.

Any ideas or experience?  :sad1:

Powdercoat is very difficult to colour match...ive had all hell of problems with previous sets of wheels

If you want a good match, paint is the way forward as they come from the factory.

I just want a near-enough colour match for a touch up stick really Alex. VW silvers don't match, maybe a silver from a different car marque may more or less match just enough to cover up the worst of the marks.
I've got a few old VW silver touch up sticks which match OEM wheels well enough to touch in kerb marks but they are a very different shade to the BBS paint.
My local wheel refurbisher says he can't match the paint but I don't want the hassle and expense of a full refurb. I'd change the colour on all four wheels if I did.

A good paint I have used in the past for the BBS silver is Plastikote Chrome Paint. It dulls (i say dulls, it just looks better) down nicely after a day or so and blends in well. Has reasonable gloss too so it looks pretty good

On my old BBS, VW Satin Silver was a pretty good match, but the Plastikote appears better.

Halfords sell it in little pots :) Just make sure you give it a good stir prior to applying it.

How bad are the marks?

They're quite bad!

And thanks for the plastikote suggestion.  :happy2: Will look into that.

I'll take some pictures later to show the damage, haven't yet as car is dirty, rain all week in Cornwall. Was going to clean the car up earlier but they forecast rain - which didn't arrive, grrrr
