MK5 air vent rattle, advice please
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:13:12 pm »
Hi all, I recently bought and MK5 and notice there is a slight rattle on the top air vent (the really big one which is situated right at the top of the dashboard). Now its not a very loud noise but is annoying, is this something I should get them to look at or just accept as a car noise? Can there even be a solution for such a thing? Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks for any advice.

Hi thanks for the input, I am afraid I am no good with car DIY, if I ask the dealer do you think they will be able to sort this?

If it's in Warrenty, otherwise I doubt they'd help.

You will be able to do it. Get some trim removal tools to avoid scratching the dash and take your time. Put felt or similar everywhere the cheap plastic comes into contact with each other.

Whereabouts are you? Also as above if in warranty they might do it.

HI, I am in Glasgow, I have a strong feeling that if I show the dealer they will say the ususal "we had a look but cant find anything wrong." And if that is the way the car parts sit then they prob wont bother thinking of an innovative solution like you have sugested. Whereabouts are you based mate?

i,m a complete numpty fella.....amd i got so fed up with the rattling creakin i had a go.
took it as apart as i dared and filled the spaces and where it would all sit back together with cheap thin foam-like packing foam and it reduced it by i would say 80%-only creaks funny enough when the car is cold-poss where the plastic has shunk a little-allstops when car is warm and on the move.

Mine also is worst when cold.

Upon removing the radio facia cover I found the metal clips (about8-10) all loose and rattling. These will be secured with some super glue.

Anyone who has replaced the head unit will have seen these.

I just used some thin packing foam I think from one of the various mods that have been delivered lol
I kept adding until it got quiet- and I also glued the screws

^^^^
Some of you guys glued your screws!?  :scared:

What are you gonna do when you need access in the future? Bust it and need to buy a whole new component section.

As the car ages you'll hear more and more rattles and squeaks. It's only a Golf, not an Audi or BMW. I've recently fitted a cowl for my boost gauge and now that creaks  but I wouldn't be without it.

There's a How-to somewhere on this site. SteveP posted it IIRC.
