Why would someone want to badge a GTI "Golf" or "Golf FSI"

As it rolls past on the production line it will have a tag to say which badge goes on it ... I'd guess it was incorrectly tagged / someone was half asleep.

I don't think that would happen as they check everything again and even at the dealers. It's more likely the boot has been replaced or the previous owner changed it. OP check if it has a roof spoiler (post a pic).

A de-badge would mean no badges at all. UK GTIs have only 'GTI' written on the left. Check the welding around the boot area to see if it's been re-done.

I worked for Honda manufacturing the civic, and if a car rolled past with a special customer
build sheet It would flag up on the computer system, and as it approached each work station
The changes would be made,we had some that just wanted Civic written on it instead of Type R  or Type S.

We called that a de badge.  :happy2:

Check it hasn't been an accident repair, the body shop might have got it wrong rebuilding it

Pretty sure VW didn't offer a 'de-badge' option from new.

My guess is either the previous owner has done this or some duffus at a body shop has badged it wrong after a repair/repaint.

In Belgium, VW offer a debadge for all their cars. You can either drop the engine tag or both type and engine. However, there's no option to ask for Golf instead of GTI. Dealer could do it for you. Perhaps it really was meant to be a sleepercar ;)

I don't know, I wouldn't of thought so,I would say that was put on afterwards I personally think it's one of two things

1/it's an accident repair and the company who did it put the wrong badge on

2/some thieving toe rag stole the original, and the leasing company replaced it with wrong one
