coolant leaking
« on: February 27, 2011, 06:24:57 pm »
My 2005 2.0 gt tdi just started leaking slightly only when the engine is running. I can drive for about 20 mins before the light comeson and i have to top up. Its leaking from the undertray and looks like it coming from the radiator.
Gonna have a look tomorrow properly under, i hope its a pipe and not the rad.
Anyone have any problems like this?

Common problem unfortunately and its the radiator for sure,  although I did replace the coolant pipe from the rad to the engine has I was losing coolant but wasn't sure where from? no sign of lose but the expansion tank was going empty now and again.

When you say it's common...what causes it? as I thought it was quite well protected behing the aircon rad and intercooler?

Damn, how much am i looking at for a new oem one?
Be careful darren. I heard if the coolants dropping with no leaks it could be the cylinder head which is common on the 2.0 bkd made early. Or it could be just filling in the air pockets

I did a rad on a BKD A3 a few months back.  It looked like the rad had pressurised itself.  All bowed at the bottom, but the leak was from the top.

The rad is quite cheap iirc and only an hour or so to fit (if you have done a few before!)

I'm not sure what causes it but when I bought my car it had had the radiator changed, and about a year later it went again so I took it into VW and they told me it was a common fault but not one recognized by VW

I checked its about 225 for oem or 90 odd from eurocarparts.
Any big difference in the two or shall stick with oem?
