New Front Tyres
« on: February 27, 2011, 01:49:48 pm »
Apologies if this has been done to death!

Time for some new fronts on my gti.  I have BBS VZ alloys on 18 inch tyres.  Can anyone advise on the best tyre to buy?  Would particularly like something that will last slightly longer than the 6000 miles I got out of the current marangoni mythos on it at the moment!

Leaning towards michelin PS3s, but good to get some different views.

Thanks in advance!

Tbh Michelin PS3 are awesome but so is the price , Lots off people on here are running vredstein and are very happy seams a premium tyre for medium cost.

6,000 mls is low do you rag your gti ? or could it be just your choice of shiiiiit tyre :drinking:

Just fitted 2 Contisport Contact 3's to my TSI.  Can't fault anything other than their price, at £130 each!  As above though, Vredestein Sessanta's get awesome reviews... would have had them on mine but for a lack of availability in my area!

.
Just a word of advice: If you're mixing asymmetric and directional tyres (front axle pair one type, and rear pair the other type), be prepared for the ESP to randomly kick in unexpectedly - Usually in a fast bend and when you don't want it! It's okay but not ideal, so best to match up tyres all round as soon as you can. It scared me the first time it happened: In a fast sweep with stone walls either side on a B-road.

The new Goodyear assymetric 2 has just been released, that is what i'm going to try when my tyres need replacing in a couple of months.

The 1st review i've seen they look like they have improved on the previous version and are similar money.

....Thanks - That's great news. I've always liked GY tyres and so I reckon they'll be my next ones. Do you have a link to a review, please?

Deffo these new GY Asymm 2's for me next tyre purchase  :happy2:. I buy a pair at a time and move my rear tyres to front to make way for the new ones on the rear - Better to have deeper tread on the rear of a FWD car like the GTI.

I'm a big fan of Vred Ultrac Sessanta - I bought 2 last week from Elite Direct for £100.80 each and they were delivered the next day. I don't think there is a better tyre for the money.

Remeber RR, if the test is not done with tyres the same size that you use, the results can be very misleading  :drinking:

Over the top mod list ;o)

Bit of a funny mix of tyres in the Auto Zeitung tyre test. The Pirelli P Zero (not the Rosso) has had some good test results, but you can't find them anywhere.
Bye Bye Edition 30.

Is this the done thing?  I've just bought a pair of Michelin PS3's to replace the absolutely useless Durun doughnuts currently fitted on my front wheels.  I've also got two Ronal variety Monza IIs on one side of the car and two BBS variety Monza II on the other side of the car so I'll use this opportunity to get the same variety of wheel on the same axle.  So new tyres on the back and move the used Conti SC3's to the front?  I would have stuck the new rubber on the front but it looks like I may have presumed incorrectly?  Cheers.

....For front wheel drive you should put the new rubber on the back. The rear of the car is lighter weight and grip is important. It's something which has been discussed here before and you will find that most agree, including the tyre companies.
