Cambelt Replacement - When?
« on: March 02, 2011, 09:53:59 pm »
Hi All,

Found 2 GTI's I am really interested in:

1. 2006 (56), 60,000 miles
2. 2007(07) 68,000 miles

Neither have had the cambelt replaced, both sellers seem to think the cambelt does not need to be changed until 120,000 miles.

I thought it is at 4 years old regardless of mileage?

All thoughts/comments appreciated!

Simon

The cambelt is 4 years or ? miles, which ever comes first.  Unfortunately I can't remember the miles but I'm sure it's been mentioned in the forum somewhere!

Going by the ages of the two cars, the 56 reg should of had it changed and the 07 is due this year.

4years, so if you are going for the first one use it to get the price down, or get them (if a vw garage) to do it.

In my service book (for an 05 plate) it does state cambelt change is at 120,000 miles with no mention of time limits but VW revised this after printing the booklet.  I suspect that the car hasn't been near a main dealer in the recent past as they would have highlighted this to the owner or if it has he's hoping to bluff you and show you the page in the booklet to back his argument up.

Its now 4 years / 60k.

You could call his bluff and phone a dealer in his presence ...

garage tricked me when I bought my GTI, bought it in May 2009, it was 4 years old and had 52 000 miles, said that I thought it needed replacing.
They looked through the service book and it said 90 000 miles. Wonder how it came down to 60 000 yet the book still states 90 000.
Ended up changing it last June, so the car was 5 years old and with 60 000 miles.
Has anyone had/heard of one going before on the MK5?
