Anyone taken the side rub strips off a 3-door?
« on: February 26, 2009, 04:46:28 pm »
Or got pics?

Are they glued on, or with some sort of screw, i.e. are there holes underneath?

Just want to see what it looks like

Heres a smoothed 3rd Mk5 GTI.. Looks nice on this car, but its not a simple job, they need removing, smoothing, then basically the full car re spraying.. Also without the car slammed, and running the full 'euro' look I doubt it would pull it off..

A whole load of filler is not light weight lol..

Yeah unfortunately its a big job, by all means look into it to confirm this though. I got that info from the guy that owns the car in the pics..

Removing the side stripes is a nice mod on er... "lesser" VWs (Did this on my Lupo).

I assumed the MK5's would be fixed with adhesive tape and clips/pins, which would mean there would be holes to fill.

This suits the MKV three door so well. David Kennedy (PVW writer) has it done to his three door MKV GTI and it looks the bollox. Shame it costs so much to do!

this is a big cost to do this, as said there are mounting holes underneath so they need to be filled then blended flat again, then the whole side of the car resprayed...and depending on your colour you may need to have the roof/hatch/bonnet all blown over to blend in. also add the strip down and build up of your trims and panel removal and your into serious cash

you've got to really want it, personally with my car being candy i think it adds a necessary detail to the side  :chicken:

LOL, thats a ridiculous mod IMO! All that effort just to remove something so small!!

I'd rather keep it!

Shame though, as I agree that it looks great!

Thank you everyone for your help!  :happy2:

I didnt think it would be that much, the rear rub strip is just stuck on (on the 3door model) so the holes are only on the door, most bodyshops will weld a piece into the holes and its just the doors that need re-spraying.
no more than £500....but then again i havnt had it done.!!

I think it looks soooo nice.....it would defo be my next mod...but im trying to stop spending!!

Id like to have it done, but so far picking my car outside my house, people have put two small dents, and a 8" scratch along the side, I can imagine spending that cash and it looking battered a month later.
