component speakers
« on: February 27, 2011, 01:36:54 pm »
my golfs audio is all standard with the rcd300 cd player, which i thought was lacking bass.
Im not into deep car shaking bass but i do like nice crisp midbass so i thought adding an RE 8" sub and amp would do the trick nicely. This isnt really the case, im not sure if its the fact my amp is cheap or weather the sound of a sub isnt what im looking for. The bass is too deep, most of the song where i want to hear midbass has nothing then all of a sudden when a bassy bit of the song starts it shakes the car to bits, ive played with all the amp settings and its still lacking bass in places and too much in other places so ive had an idea.
from my old car i have a decent set of 2 way 6.5" components, what if i ditched the sub, installed these components, amp them with the same amp but use the standard wiring? so basically, will the standard wiring be upto the job? can i fit these into my car? "i can measure the depths if needed" will it be worth it?

if anyone could shed some light that would be great because i dont have any money to spend because alloys are more important, and if it is do-able and worthwile because i have the stuff lying round anyway then great because this sound system is poor, cheers

I believe you'd need to install some sort of crossover to restrict the components from trying to reproduce the deep bass so they only have to deal with the mid to high end frequencies the a similar thing for the sub but to do the opposite (amp may have a high/low pass filter). You would also need an amp with either an input/output control or a head unit that allows adjustment of level, frequency etc of the sub. That way you can adjust the levels and frequencies to all tie in together, effectively creating two full range speakers that work together in.unison.

That's how I  figure it mate but somebody who's more stereo oriented may differ.

I heard some Focal hifi (home) speakers the other day and was totally blown away by the sound. They were tiny things, maybe a 5" driver and were rigged up in a 2.1 set up with a sub. When I asked the salesman about the price of the subwoofer he told me it wasn't turned on! There was bass aplenty and you could hold the speaker in one hand it was so small.

If ever I upgrade my car speakers I know what make I'll be buying!

I have Focal's all-round.
Access in the front, and Polyglass in the rear.

Highly recommended!

bit off topic but relevant, when I had my passenger door trim off the other night I was shocked to see what looked like a frequency filter nestling in my GTI front door was made by phillips and had ohm figures all over it.

Rich you mean the triangle shaped crossover? I think one place that VW scimped on the mk5 was the audio, It leaves a lot to be desired, It doesn't sound too bad in every day radio type stuff but if you put a decent bit of music on then it fails miserably.
