I'm due an upgrade and have been asking the same question recently.  A lot of people have recommended the HTC Desire to me.  I'm also considering a Nokia N8.  I'm going to do my best not to get an iPhone just because everyone else seems to have one and I want to have a bit of individuality.  Yes, I know how good they are etc etc. as I have an iPod touch, but I don't want to be blinkered and I'm sure that there are equally good phones out there.

FOR SALE!

The desire HD uses the same hardware as the htc HD and has a good few issues. The screen maybe bigger but its the same resolution as a desire.

I couldn't recommend avoiding the N8 more! I have to support all these phones and I get to see a lot more than an average user.

In the order of less hardware related issues I get:

Desire
Galaxcy S
Iphone
Desire HD
N8

I'd love to put any blackberry at the top of that list but I'm bias as I have spent years with them and I'm a certified engineer.
