Have you considered the HTC Desire?  Easily better than an iPhone ...

I had a SE Xperia X10 for a week until I had to send it back as it was terrible.  But the HTC, even though its the same OS, has much better hardware and HTC have added their own little touches that takes android and makes it so much better.

Galaxy S on 2.3 is good fun, or 2.2.1 if you cant get hold of the rom.

I did have one, and it was great, but it was too big and to be frank, the iPhone has it for UI and integration with everything else inc itunes with lossless audio

A lad that works for me has had a few HTC phones but they simply cant cope with everyday life in a workshop environment, he has been through 2 screens already and buttons arent working properly.

My iphone 3 is still going strong after 18 months.

non of todays smart phones offers battery life, blackberrys are the closest to a decent battery life.

get an n8 if you want an awful OS, a slow phone that crashes.

i have a blackberry torch + 9700 bold 2. Id recommend them.
