whining noise when idling
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:11:13 am »
slight problem has arisen in last week or so

noticed the car has started to make a slightly high pitched whining/screeching noise when i come to a stop, goes away as soon as I start to move again, but when I stop it starts up again whining away  no dash lights what so ever and car still running well.

anyone got any ideas what it may be?, or experienced this before?

got it booked in at jkm on monday for my new brakes to be fitted and an apr fuel pump so will get them to have a look but still a wee bit concerned

thanks

Could just be the belt tensioner getting as bit dry? or it wants adjusting as the belt is slipping ever so slightly?
Sideways yo!

thanks for the replies,

in regards to the belts is this the one if you have the bonnet up then its to the front of the engine drivers side?

as the noise seems to be coming from that area, is only noticed after i have been driving and I come to some traffic and stop and the screeching noise starts up, lower the window and it is more noticeable though as soon as i set off again it goes. when I have stopped to have a look under the bonnet while the engine is still running(dsg in P or N) the noise also stops. so is only occuring when in gear...

aargh engine probs!  :fighting:

hopefully jkm will fix it

My ED30 has just been into VW for this very issue - the first time I took it in they said they couldn't herar anything and that it was the injectors sounding and the throttle body depressurising.  Took it back a second time and they used a listening device / amplifier to try and work out what it was.  Turns out the high pitched squeeking was the clutch system on the alternator pulley - they either changed the entire alternator or the enitre clutch drive for the pulley - and hey presto noise has disappeared.

Your problem sounds exactly like this - mine was all changed under warranty.

thanks for that

little bit concerned about takin mine to the dealers as when they look under the bonnet they will see my mods and bye bye any warranty claim and those bits sound expensive... not good

did they give you an idea how it occurred? and how much the parts were?

thanks again

I can't remember whether it was the clutch system on the pulley or the entire alternator system .... so no - no idea of cost was replaced under warranty - hmmm as for your mods - return car to stock ? too much effort ? Repair does sound a bit costly - I'll check ETKA later to see what the components are and an estimate of cost.

Gareth
