Hey folks,

I can't tell whether it's since I had Focal components fitted all round, as I fitted an RNS510 a day after... Basically the story is;

The rear left speaker buzzes when the key is in the ignition / car is on, the buzz dissapears when I press the brake pedal, which to me indicates an earth problem? (maybe?)

Only question is, I haven't changed the earthing point of my sub/amp in the boot, the only thing I have done, is when fitting the line out convertor to the RNS, The RCD I had before had a screw on the top of the back of the chassis which I had the earth wire from my line out connector going to.
The RNS510 did not have these screws, so I used the GPS antenna socket of the RNS for the earth wire to connect to, and  then screwed the antenna connector in it's place (which also holds the earth cable in)

Is that a bad idea for an earthing point/ Would it cause that buzzing? (Why only from one speaker?) Although to be fair, my line out convertor is wired to the REAR speaker wires.

Oh, just to top it off, when using my phone via the stereo, I can hear a whining to match the revs, ie the whine sound goes up when I accelerate! Like a bad video game basically! (Yet is fine when listening to music/radio).

Thanks in advance,

Sean

Deffo sounds like an earth problem matey.

I'd try another point to mount the line out on the RNS.

Hi mate,

Yeah, I guess the GPS antenna socket on the RNS is not really a great earth point to use - it looked bronze but I was too eager to get the RNS in and fitted (plus it was 11pm at the time!)

I just need to get the earth cable to touch the metal chassis of the radio or connect it to another earth, but the wire is quite short, and after the 'seats experience 2010' im done with wire extending for a while

I had an RCD for just over 3 weeks, then gave in and got the RNS LED and it's worth every single penny!

I probably will extend the earth wire as I want it all done properly - and i've got enough wire left from last time

Why didn't you just tap into the earth on the quadlock?

 Yep, asking myself that now!

To be fair, the line out convertor had a ring connector so on the RCD screwing it to the chassis was nice and easy, and I expected to do the same on the RNS but when it didn't have the same screw points on the rear chassis in a wild panic to install it quickly so I could go out, I just tried a quick fix, which we know never works!

But yeah, when I take it out on Saturday or Sunday I will just tap it into the Earth that already plugs into the quadlock.

So I did this last week... I extended the earth wire and actually grounded it in at the grounding area underneath the driver side kick panel.

...All that and it still does it

It's the phone part that is most problematic, as when using the bluetooth via the RNS I am hearing the sound engine in a high pitched whine! (Yet never when listening to radio / iPod!)

Must be earthing somewhere but can't think where...

I had a RCD310 fitted last week by the dealer for free though I get the buzzing noise when accelerating as well.....

Have no idea what they've done so need to pull it all out when I get mine back - if you fix it let me know so I can try and fix mine.

Have you got an external cd player plugged in as you need to swap a couple of wires in the quadlock connector if so

Have an Ipod attached  - works sometimes though sometimes it will not pick it up...... :surprised:

Worked perfectly on the old RCD500....just the RCD310.

Get the car back tomorrow from the bodyshop so pulling it all out to have a look.....any more details on what needs doing?

Sorry for hijacking the thread  :ashamed:

voila http://www.my-gti.com/1336/cd-changer-audio-sound-quality-problems-after-changing-head-unit

Interesting... I remember reading about that before I fitted the RNS, but as I don't use the CD changer wondered if it affected me... I use a Dension Gateway 5, it has it's own plug, but im sure somewhere along the line it probably does use the cd changer in some way...

One to try next time I take the HU out I think!

OK - Update, did the pin swap today, doesn't take long just a few minutes but make sure you have a small flat head screwdriver to pop the pin out.

I *think* it's 99% sorted it, I made a couple of calls and didn't seem to hear that high pitch whine, nor have I noticed the rear speaker buzzing anymore!
