Does every GTI have the G T I letters on the back?

Are you sure it's a GTI? 

Possibly the boot/tailgate panel has been replaced by previous owner for one off a standard golf?

I sem to remember a lad on here who bought a white GTI with he same, and his was a import i believe, a lot of imports dont carry a spare wheel. There is nothing wrong with imports by the way, maybe check at the dealers, they can tell you the history of the car.

The tailgate replacement was my first thought, just wondering if any certain models came without the GTI letters . . .  as if it has been replaced it would signify some damage no?

As far as I can tell from all documentation etc, it's not an import either.

Previous owner may have re badged to look more of a street sleeper too, wont cost you much to swap for the Gti badge though if you prefer.

Does yours have optional extras? The original purchaser might have requested a de badge

Could be an import although my car was PDI'd in Dubai and has the correct lettering and a spare wheel with tool kit.

Could be something as simple as the previous owner messing with the badges e.t.c

I believe it was a company car before mine, if that has anything to do with it? There are no options on it either . . . had to stretch the wallet enough as it is!

I saw a thread - not sure if it was on here or on DW - of a Mk6 detail and that was badged GOLF on one side and FSI on the other , would that be a de-badge job too?

A de-badge would mean no badges at all. UK GTIs have only 'GTI' written on the left. Check the welding around the boot area to see if it's been re-done.

No. It's not a de-badge. It's come like that from factory. I wonder whether it's something that you can spec.
