« on: March 13, 2011, 11:10:04 pm »
hey all,

I am a new gti owner as from yesterday, yay !

I got in the car and nearly fell into it - no arm rest - oh dear
anyway i see that i can retro fit one, they seem expensice from vw, anyone got a recommendation of another place which sells them with a good price?

also, has anyone tried one of these ebay jobbies, if so which one and did it install easily ?

thanks in advance

My - limited - understanding is that they are easyish to fit if you are ok with losing the rear air vents but a bugger if you want them working ..you have to take out the seats.

Not really my field of expertise, just answering as you seem a bit miffed about the lack of an answer  :happy2:

Cheapest place for a new mk5 armrest is ebay.

Silverwagen or dsgwagen were selling them at £225 but with cloth top. OEM leather tops are £75.

Used ones come up on here and ebay for around £140-£180

Piece of pi$$ to fit.

Perhaps you need to find the cheapest place to find some manners, before your armrest.

About 12 months ago they were everywhere for about £100, but demand seems to have increased dramatically since then.
I have heard they are not difficult to fit, but the rear vent fitting does make them a real pain in the arse.  Be prepared to lose fingers!

If postage costs in then you will be fine to buy one off of German Ebay, you would be better to wait for one to turn up for sale but be prepared to jump on it when it does.  To simply replace the rear cup holder without the rear vents working is about 7-8 screws but you will need a torx bit set. T-20 I think.

There is a search function on the forum to look back over previous posts as lots of things like arm-rest have been discussed to death, sometimes people just dont see the posts straight away or often only answer if the topic interests them and it seems the original poster has done there own research first.  Just a comment.  If you are planning on sticking around you would do well to post an intro with some pics of your new car in the new members section shows that you havent just come to buy and sell or ask 1 question.  Its a really friendly community but its all about give and take  :happy2:

I've got a guide hosted on some of my personal web host, and I fitted mine myself I will tell you what i found best.

I struggled to see how people fitted these easier without fitting the rear vents, I tried to do this and followed the guide and still couldn't get it too fit. In the end I followed the full guide took all the centre console off (not fully out just loose so i could fiddle around underneath it. This was was so much easier then trying to force the thing in.

I then fitted one in my mates, no guide and air vents like mine, took me 40-60 minutes, not the quickest time but that's fully functioning. Just got for it all out it's so much easier then trying to push and pull things into place.
