USB question
« on: March 14, 2011, 02:44:16 pm »
I recently had an RNS 510 fitted by Darren (Ace operator) and now want to get rid of the CD changer in the armrest and fit an alternative. I know the MDI is the popular choice but I'm not too keen on the re-cabling it involves and would be quite happy with just the "old" USB dock . The CD changer cabling is already there so that's half the job done. I'm aware of its limitations but I just thought it would be better than fitting the blank bin thing and would possibly give me a covered phone charging and storage box. Prices on e bay for the USB dock are stupidly high at the moment so an alternative might be to get the blank bin and fit a chassis mounted USB terminal with a voltage dropper as required, or get the old Ipod dock and convert it to USB if that's possible. Does anybody have anything to offer ( maybe an old USB box!!) or am I right off the map?
Regards,
John

CD changer wiring and the MDI wiring is different as the MDI uses the aux pins which I am lead to beleive the CD changer doesnt use.

I was considering removing the ipod dock and lead, buying an MDI insert with fly leads + the kufatec MDI loom for about £100 when you have bought them both seperately.

VCDS Scanning/Coding, RNS and MDI retrofits, and specialist mechanics services with VAGtek available - Just PM me for details.

Thanks Alex,
What I'm after is to leave the CD changer cable in situ and hang "something else" on the end of it, either an old style USB dock or a converted-to-USB ipod dock. If this isn't possible I'll just put the blank bin in the armrest and add a 12 volt socket inside it for charging. It's really just for something to do that's different if I'm honest.

John
