Engine out for cambelt?

Do they take the engine out for cambelt?
Im going to have it done thursday, im thinking they are going to have some issue with my intake and the heat shield

If they had to take the engine out it would be a dam sight more than 400quid

true, but to replace the engine mounts they kinda lift the engine out a tad but that doesnt cost

It's much easier to lift the engine up in order to get at it, it's quite tight by the cambelt.

Mines getting it done this weekend and my mate rekons it's easier and quicker to lift the engine and remove the driveshafts aswell to stop them getting damaged. He works in the dealers and that's how they do them.

Interesting that dealers remove the driveshafts, when the official VW manual doesnt state to do that. It merely says remove the pendulum bracket, support the engine, remove the upper engine bracket bolts and lift engine slightly with the 'support bracket' tool they detail.

My mate says it's not necessary but he does it as a precaution, says he's seen a few damaged during lifting the engine and he'd rather take out 12 bolts (I think) than risk it.

Thats a fair point

That could well explain why my driveshaft bolts have been undone as the cambelt was done relatively recently.

On my 05 model the cambelt cover wad one piece with the engine mount running through the middle so the engine had to come out slightly. To save costs the garage just chopped the cover in half and replaced it with the newer, two piece cover.

Try a different dealers if there's another one not too far away, sounds like you don't have much faith in them judging from a few threads you've posted in

Some garages do some odd things that you just dont need to do.  No need to remove engine, undo driveshafts or even cut up the one piece cover (which i thought was the newer version?).

The engine does need to be raised on one side slightly, but not enough to cause driveshaft issues.  This is just to get the mount removed from the block.

Why do you have to go to a dealer?  There are loads of specialists that will be far more experienced than any dealer and take much more care.
