Boring question..
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:50:42 pm »
Hey all..

Would anyone be able to make an educated guess on the following question..

What would be the weight of a 1 meter long piece of 76mm diameter 3mm think stainless steel??

I told you it was boring..

Reason is that im looking at having a titanium centre pipe made for my car, just trying to figure out if its going to be worth it!?

Thanks

Jonny

T304, sorry, should have mentioned that..

I have found out the following..

Steel 8.0 grms / ccm
Ti 4.95

Kind of helps, as the Ti exhaust would be only 1mm thick it should be a lot lighter! Take in to account the relative weight difference and that should make a hell of a difference % wise.. Just need to find out how much the centre section of the current exhaust I have weights up at..

3MM thick is a bit hefty for an exhaust.  I reckon the material thickness is about 20SWG which is 0.9mm thick.  The weight saving is likely to only be 1-2kg at the most.  However the sound properties of Ti are totally different to SS, due to the different stiffness properties.

Ah ok, so the thickness would be similiar with the Ti pipe too possibly? Hmm.. I have heard that you get a much more metallic sound from the exhaust using Ti, much like inconel etc..

We use Iconel blocks as reaction bars, when riveting aircraft structure.  Now that is hard stuff!
