MK5 GTi Advice for prospective owner please.

Hi

I am currently selling a lovely Impreza STi Prodrive...fingers crossed...and looking at a better compromise.  I need a car for work purposes on top of a 30 mile commute x2 each day.  the scooby is too thirsty and I already have use of an Audi diesel, so thought a MK5 GTi would be a good bet.  I have had a MK1, Mk3 and Mk4 before and have test driven a MK5 GTi so kind of know what to expect.

Does the GTi come with cruise control as standard?  I have heard that if DSG's go wrong its mega money...how reliable are they...anything I should be aware of when checking one over?  Being long in the tooth...well, 41, I dont suffer from lead foot syndrome...how close to the advertised combined MPG of 36 is actually attainable driving sensibly mainly on A and B roads at 55mph?  Any other advice recommended.  Thanks.

Hi mate and welcome, unfortunately the GTI doesnt come with cruise fitted as standard, however it can easily be retrofitted, something Ive had done recently.

Im currently seeing about 33mpg doing a 90 mile commute keeping to the speedlimit, half being a dual carriageway and half being a major A road singe carriageway.

The dsg is reliable as long as you stick to the oil and filter change intervals... But if it does go wrong then yeh get ya wallet out  . Just look out for 1 thats been well maintained and you can't go wrong

I'm getting around 33-35 on average - that's mainly motorway miles. There's a long stretch of road works on one of the motorways I use and over the 10 odd miles I'm getting around 43 (that was sticking to 40mph) - so 36mpg doing 55mph is very doable

Btw - I moved last May from a 310bhp Impreza to the Mk5 and love it - cabin is such a nicer place to be and I prefer the power delivery.

As much as I like the scoob, my heart has always been with golfs and I can't wait to get back in one.  I think the power delivery is more linear in the golf isn't it?  Clearly its not going to ne doing 0-60 in less than five seconds but the golf excels in areas that the scoob can't compete. So it looks like I will get the mpg from a golf...what known faults are there that I should look for when I view one? Cheers.

Yep - very linear and it feels like a much more sporty car all the time - whilst the scoob was pretty docile then all hell broke loose when it was on boost.

I've got a bluefin remap for my Mk5 but I'm currently running it on the standard map as it's fast enough - and I don't want to get sucked into that game of modding all the time as no matter how fast a car is, then you always get used to the acceleration.  My scooby had uprated brakes and suspension as well, so might go down that path with the golf, but it just seems so right in standard spec then I may just keep it the same and enjoy the lower insurance premiums!

its easy to get sucked into upgrading and modifying.  tbh, the subaru is an absolute madman as standard, i generally use 5th gear for overtakes!!  so something that is a little less manic is definately going to suit me.  however, trying to sell a high performance vehicle at the moment is really difficult. 

what's the Bluefin like in terms of power, mpg, etc?  as soon as i sell my STi and get a golf, i might want a little more power and concentrate on the asthetics.
