Midline Display has vanished!!
« on: March 17, 2011, 05:36:17 pm »
Two weeks ago I was involved in a three car pile up, luckily enough though we were only doing around 15 mph. My poor old golf suffered frontal damage which resulted in a £3000 insurance repair.
The majority of damage was bumper, bonnet and wing related however I also trashed radiator, fans, air con condenser and headlight brackets.

I picked the car up today and was initially very happy. Five minutes into my drive home the digital display vanished leaving just the red line, slowly the line also faded and has not returned. I have pressed all the buttons including the reset, switched the engine off and removed the key twice...still nothing. The audible alarm however is still working and beeped several times on the way home.

The only electrical components which have been changed are fans and headlights. I dont think the battery was disconnected as I didnt need to enter the code for MFD2 when I first powered it up so I am at a loss as to what is causing this.

Any advice you guys can provide would be most helpful  :happy2:

I hope I'm wrong but it looks like you may be needing a new display.

I can't help with the problem but can give you this to think about:

You only need the code for the radio if it has been removed from the car, it recognises the ECU of its 'home' car so won't ask for the code even if the battery is disconnected.

Is it three beeps in a row from the MFD?  That suggests a problem that needs urgent attention.  If its just the bongs for the seetbelt or low temperature etc then its obviously nothing to worry about.

Do the lights above the display work?  I.e. oil pressure etc?

I didnt have three beeps in a row just the usual bong for low wiper fluid etc, all the lights above are fine thankfully . I have just been out and checked again and the display is now back , i suspect it will disappear again at some stage,  so I'm going to have to get it checked out I think when I get my coil packs done!!

That's odd!

When I drive my car for about an hour my display slowly fades from the bottom, the longer I drive the more it fades!!  doesn't completely go, but then I've spent a max of about two and a half hours behind the wheel at any one time.

Maybe its a fuel gauge warning

The cluster sounds a bit fubar, might be worth mentioning it to the place that has just done the repair or to the insurance company if youve just picked it up.  If you have VCDS you can check the cluster for error codes and do an output test to see if you can replicate the issue.
