Wheels - fitment
« on: March 17, 2011, 02:43:50 pm »
Will an 18" x 8" wide wheels with an ofset of 40 fit the golf? Would that make them stick out quite a bit or sit in?

Cheers

My Black TD PR1.2 were 18x8.0 et45 with running 225/40 michelins on my old r32, and i ran 5mm spacers on back... same as running 11mm spacers on standard wheels... plenty of room inside, had no rubbing on back... fronts rubbed when turning in extreme, as they had peeled paint off lip of arch, but car was lowered dramatically on coilovers...

Daz,

offset smaller than 45 isn't as easy as some say.

Even with 45 in some cases the tyre touches the wheel arch.
In such narrow cases every mm counts !!
I promise with offset 40 it will touch when you're cornering fast with
four persons in your car.

So the best recommendation ist to avoid offsets smaller than 45 !!

That is 17 mil ish further out than a stock Monza. If you lower the car it will rub, under certain circumstances all depends what you are trying to achieve.  :happy2:

right well they are out of the question then, car is not lowered but it might get lowered after i've found some wheels.

So the higher the number the further they sit under the arches?

What is the best offset then for the golf 50?

Cheersfor your help

Sorry to jump in on your thread but I've got the same questions!
Will an 8.5 x 19 wheel on an offset of ET50 rub the inside or outside of the arch if it's lowered? (will be on 225/35/19 tyres).

I've been looking at getting 18s, not really bothered about 19s......

so what would be the best fitment for 18s..... I don't want them to stick out at the front too much like they do and certaily do not want them to scrape at all.

A local place said 45s were best????

Cheers

You have to take into account the width of the wheel and the offset. The standard wheel is 7and a half in wide. If you bought a 8 inch wide wheel you will be adding a 1/4 of an inch to the front and a 1/4 of an inch to the back. Now the offset is 51 mil if you went down to say 45 you are adding a further 6 mil pokkage.
Obviously it depends how low you go but you can add 10 to 12 mil to the standard spec without rubbing and a decent drop ( sometimes you cant, depends on the wheel ) but for most driving you should be fine.
Given all the above waffle a good spec wheel would be 8inch wide and 45 offset, which if my math is correct is 6.5 mil on the width and 6 mil on the offset which is 12.5 mil, any wider and you will defo start rubbing.
Bear in mind this spec is based for looks really, the arch will fill out nicely but on the limit of rubbing. If you want to drive fast round bends all the time then i would suggest 7.5in wheel or back to 50ish offset. You can also go a bit wider but then you are talking about more work to get them to fit.

Hope this helps.  :happy2:

8.5 offset gives 12.5 mil further poke, you defo wont rub on the inside, and should be ok for rubbing on the arch, as long as the offset is 50 like you say.  :driver:

Out of interest, what are the specs on your wheels as they sit just right..

(will be on 225/35/19 tyres).

I've given you the answer in the other thread:

8.5" and ET50 will be no problem with OEM or most sport suspensions.

Only the big Bilstein struts on front with it's larger diameter may cause a problem,
but it's best to have a try and look.

Some companies like MTM and Abt offer wheels with same size für Golf and A3.
Have a look on their websites if you like.

I guess it will fit even with Bilstein.

The best fitment is imo an offset between 45 and 50. No problems to expect with
8.0" wide wheels and 225 mm tyres. Just the upper screw has to be removed.
In most cases even 8.5" will be no problem.
235 mm tyres may cause some trouble with ET45, so I'd recommend an offset of
48 - 50 for them. Every mm counts with wider tyres!!

8.0x19 ET45 + 225/35 R19:

I think there's no need for additional spacers.

I just had to removed the screw in the wheel arch. But there's not much space.
I promise with ET40 it will rub when cornering fast.
Be aware that the suspension has some flexing and the wheels may come a bit
outwards on the top (inwards on underside).
