How do I remove the Scuttle Panel?
« on: March 14, 2011, 01:23:52 pm »
Following on from my previous post http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,21675.0.html I need to remove the scuttle panel to reseat the bonnet release cable grommet. How easy is it to do, is there anything I should be aware of.

Am i correct in saying i need to
1 - remove caps from wiper splins
2 - undo bolt and ease the wiper off spline
3 - start from left handside of the scuttle panel and ease it off by hand.

It may sound like a simple question but i hate removing any type of plastic trim!

Not done the GTI but my brothers alhambra was held on with 3-4 clips I did exactly 1-3 and slid my hand underneath to put pressure on the plastic around the clips to try and avoid damage, it came off alright and then I re-adjusted the clips before re-fitting.  While you have the plate off give the recess by the right hand (as you drive) wiper a clean as leaves and other gunk collect there after falling down the grilles in the plate itself and will eventually end up down where the wing bolts on to the sill.

Yep you got it in one!! If you go to the edge of the screen where the black strip meets the window you can get a better hold of the scuttle panel, you can also (carefully!!!!) use a small flat blade screwdriver to assist you in taking it off!! But to remove it completely take it out towards the windscreen direction, dont try to pull it out below the bonnet!!

I've done this about 4 times on my golf, and its a piece of cake

1. remove the foamy bits either side of the rubber strip inside the engine bay
2. set the wipers to 'park' position, remove caps and remove wipers from splines
3. carefully lift an edge of scuttle panel off from one side of the windscreen, i personally used a piece of cloth to 'wedge' the scuttle panel off the screen (also means you clean in one go too!)

and as richn83 said, clean out that gunk from under the scuttle panel!

Worth putting a bit of tape or some other mark on your windscreen so that when you replace the wiper you know roughly what position to put it in

It's a good opportunity to clean out any leaves and other debris stuck in the corners as this is where the water drains.
