Spacers on the track?
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:18:59 pm »
Hi guys,

I am having a problem...
I installed DaveB's nqsbbk and I found out that my track rims don't have enough clearance (they fit but the clearance is less than 1mm).
The rims are OEM Goal anthracite 7.5x17 ET50 .

So, my questions are:
1. Is it safe to use spacers (hub centric ones since they are safer) on the track?
2. With the current wheels and 10mm H&R hub centric spacers should I expect the wheels to rub against the wheel arches?

I have real the 2 or 3 topics regarding using spaces (and regarding spacers failing) but did not find the answer to my questions.

One thing that I found odd is that VolkswagenRacing is using 10mm of built in spacers. Since VWR is using these with stock ET50 wheels I should not have a problem with my rims and the H&R spacers, right? Or is VWR using the carbon fiber wheel arches that have more clearance?
And if VWR is using these brakes with TD ET45 rims the problem gets bigger.
I know that there are 2 types of belts for VWR but which one is getting used for tracking?

My current plan is to sell the OEM Goal rims and buy 17 inch TD's. These have 45 Offset so I only loose 5mm opposed to 10mm if I use the spacers.
But if I do not sell the Goal rims I will be forced to used spacers (more or less, depending if my safety is in jeopardy or not).

Please help with any thoughts you might have.
Thanks

rex I can't tell you if using spacer is safe or not as I never used spacer
But I have to recongnise I'm not keen to use them.

All I can say is if you use standard wishbones and according to your will size you should have 14mm of room left between your tyre and your wheel arch. So I think that using 5 or 10mm spacer should be fine.

They have some 5 or 6 mm spacers with bub centric.

Thank you for the link. Since the hub height is 12mm, the possibility to have spacers for OEM wheels that are equal or less than 5.5mm is zero (the wheels have the first 6.5mm of the center at a 45 degrees angle. So, only after 6.5mm the wheel actually sits on the wheel hub).
The link is very useful if I want to change the rims for rims that have the center bore larger than 57.1mm

Thank you for the info. I have the TT arms so, the clearance should be less. I will make one more try to sell the rims and buy TD ProRace 1.2.
If it fails I will buy the spacers.

Yes, that would be great, thank you.

MAT ED30 thank you for your photos but I think I miss understood what you were asking...
Could you please put a picture to see the clearance between the wheels and the wheel arches (a photo from the front of the car)?

Likewise on mine Matt - not much space (circa 2mm), but enough (not the best of pics but you get the idea)

Are these 17inch or 18 inch? what is the wheel width and offset?

LE: You have the 6 pot Porsche caliper, right?

ANY GOOD

I'd simply put a 2 or 3mm spacer non hubcentric in there, theres still plenty of spigot for the wheel to sit on and the cars suspension/geomtery doesnt know that you're just not running a wheel with 2-3mm less ET. Anything up to 4mm then non hubcentric is ok for spigot, I personally would jump then from a 4mm flat spacer to the smallest hubcentric which is 8mm I think.

I always work on 3mm between rotating and static and 5mm between rotating/rotating

On a particularly lightweight wheel or a replica I might add another 1mm to these to account for wheel flex but you need 2/3mm at most there

Thanks Dave,

I tried with a 4mm spacer and the wheel is NOT resting on the spigot. So with 3mm of spacer the wheel will rest with less than 1 mm on the spigot. I don't think this is enough for track days. Even more, I heard that non hub centric spacers might cause vibrations, that is why I am thinking of hub centric spacers. Yes, I am thinking of the smallest hub centric spacer which is the 10mm one from H&R (I would only buy the spacers form H&R and Eibach).

Dave, do you know if the TD ProRace 7,5x17 ET 45 has enough clearance for the Porsche nqsbbk? I know I asked you about the 18 inch ones and you said that they have enough space but I do not know if the 7,5x17 ET 45 have enough space.

Cheers,
Vlad
