Less BHP is better!
« on: March 02, 2009, 10:28:27 am »
ED30 was running superchips lower power map the weekend.

About 270 bhp, down 30 bhp than their normal "nuts" map.

Just like to say, its a brilliant map.

Its just right for the car, being so usable in every gear.

If any one has bluefin on an ed30 and they want to try it,  just email superchips & they will sent you different maps for free!

nah, you can never have too much power.

Better to use your right foot to control it rather than not have it there in the first place imo.

coming from a guy who doesnt pay tooooo much attention to the 2.0 petrol turbo remap threads....

....is there not the capability to limit the torque in 1st and 2nd gear? maybe 3rd in the wet?

Yes and no I think.

With turbo cars they tend to be abit on/off so more difficult to throttle control.

You get to 4k with the "Max map" and its warp speed

Was this directed at me?

No capability that I have heard of on the bluefin to limit torque?

Yes, SuperChips did develop a "reined in" map for reduced torque in 1st and 2nd.

directed at anybody that might know. lol

I just thought it would be the best of both worlds, without having to switch maps.

limited power low down in the lower gears, so your not spinning and going nowhere (just ask john_o :happy2: ) but when your in 3rd and above, its warp speed when traction isnt so much of an issue??

....True in theory but not quite so reliable in practice (IMO).

It can sometimes be tricky to avoid wheelspin from lots of power when your throttle response is improved as a result of various mods. I agree that it's better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it, but that applies more to brakes.

I think it's bacillus who has a sig with words something like "Power is useless without traction". It's all about driveability.

But my comments aren't directed at SC or any particular tuner's map. Well, except perhaps the remap which QST did on a good friend's GTI - Horrible to drive! Lots of power but wheelspin in most gears and the feeling of either being either full-on or full-off. Needless to say, disputes arose and I have to say I personally would now never recommend QST mostly due to their attitude and regardless of their products.

I find if i turn my revo off the car can sometimes be more fun or just easier to control. Traction is the big issue.

Power is useless without improoving your traction. Lsd has to be a mod to consider to make full use of all those extra ponnies :happy2:

The full 300 - 320 bhp Superchips map is I take it the one that is being referred to here.  This map provides much reduced boost pressure in 1st and 2nd gear, hence performance at Santa Pod, however after 3rd performance is blistering.  It's my feeling that this is more useful out on the road for most situations, however as those who have read my other threads, it was a bit annoying to lose that extra grunt in 2nd for getting off quickly.  I have also had the 270bhp map, have had 6 maps from superchips in total over the last 2 months, and the performance to 5th gear was absolutely blisering - wheelspin all the way from.  It was ideal for "scareing" people !!  However this map offered much less performance in 5th & 6th. I mean, I do a lot of dual carriageway driving so that mound of torque in 6th at 3500 rpm aka 75mph is quite useful (also good for embarassing people in other performance cars).  I decided to stick with the full power map for this reason, but will be attending at Superchips HQ soon so that they can iron out a few problems.

I suppose I want to have my cake and eat it, I mean loads of torque low down more torque at the top less lag etc etc ! Just not achievable and all vehicle modifications are a trade off of various factors for high performance in one given area.

As for traction, unless it is wet, I seldom get any problems with traction with the full power map, ESP cuts in less whilst remapped than standard.  However I have had some issues for example off throttle wheelspin 5th gear 70mph ! Which was a little unexpected !

The one thing I would watch is the clutch from time to time mine slips heavily between 3000 - 3500 rpm's in 5th & 6th, I really don't think "my" clutch doesn't like 320 ft/lb of torque delivered quickly - but there are others on here reaally pushing the envelope on standard ED30 clutches with power close to or just exceeding 360 bhp.

Just need to get mine sorted once and for all,

Regards,

Gareth
