1 series 1.6 running costs
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:19:39 pm »
Female friend of mine has just passed her license, is 19 and is looking at the 1.6 bmw 1 series as a first car.

Now she has asked me for advice, and I know nothing about these cars. She has 6k to spend on it.

Personally I would recommend a cheap little run about as a first car, but I dont think she will go for that.

So is there anything I should know about the 1 series? MPG, costs of parts, servicing?

Its a beamer so the servicing isn't exactly going to be cheap but then again it probably won't need much doing to it out of routine.  If its one of the efficient dynamics models they are amazingly efficient.

At 19 I think its the insurance she's got to worry about ... its frightening what young people are asked to pay these days.

my misses has a 120 petrol 177bhp I think, goes quite well and averages early 30-35 combined, not sure about the 1.6 it maybe workin alot harder pushin the car about, or maybe more economical

Mates wife had a 1.6 and was shocked at how uneconomical it was and she shopped it pretty quickly. Dont have any figures but just relaying her comments. I would recommend your friend gets something lighter and more economical rather than going for the badge (or if she wants a BM, how about a mini)  :happy2:

Tell her to look at the 118D ES, was a special edition they did with alloys and colour coded bits, all 1series have the efficiency dynamics, ime stop start, power battery with braking and what not. The diesels will be 100x better on fuel than a 1.6

Even 2005's? I thought it only came out 3 years ago?

Asthmatic at best, really struggles to pull the weight and fuel economy shows. If she can put up with that, then they're a nice little car.

She might struggle in winter, being of little experience and having RWD.

Get it off runflats to cheaper and better rubber, and use a normal garage to service it, shouldn't be much more than a normal hatch to run.

She says her insurance is 2k. I did advise her to get a mini but she doesn't want one because loadsnof girls her age do.

Basically it was between a 1 series and a a3. I told her 1 series cause I wanna have a go in it. Good shout about the diesel I will suggest that to her!
