Chrome tail pipe

My chrome tail pipe is blackish at the bottom and has small black spots on it, would wire wool clean it up like new (ish) and take away the blackness ? will it still be chrome under the black stuff ?

Very fine grade wire wool and some metal polish and itll look good as new

What I used was 00 wire wool with autosol metal cleaner from halfords and alot of elbow grease and buff off with autosol and a dry clean rag - should look as good as new when you're finished

I have used wonder wheels before with great success on tail pipes and exhaust boxes where they can be seen from behind

I have found great success in washing first thoroughly with bucket and sponge, then go to work with the wire wool. Either dry it with a cloth or let it dry in its own time then go to town with the Autosol, I get great results

could try some 'tar remover' for the black spots
and then any chrome/metal polish

I've used engine degreaser in the past to get rid of the soot.

Then I move on to autosol and 0000-grade wirewool.

Finally buff with a microfibre.

I need more patience 

I washed my car yesterday and although the pipes look better they're still not great. If the weathers decent I'm going to spend another hour on them...

I'll post a picture later of an old car with a pipe n back box clean with wonder wheels. Took 20 mins and patience between cleaning and reapplying.

I bet oven cleaner would be awesome.

Are those before and after pictures in the wrong order? The 'after' looks covered in soot

Yeah the after pic is the first one, he has labelled them up right just in a counter intuitive order.

As I can still see the autosol on them you need to get yourself a damp cloth and give them a wipe over then give them another clean and polish.  once you have got rid of the dirt you need to avoid adding too much autosol and use a clean cloth to buff them up to a really nice shine sometimes too much polish or product leaves a bad finish.

X2 - I used Wonder Wheels yesterday, along with a wheel cleaning brush (that I don't plan on using again on the wheels!) and finally some Autosol. 20 mins work from them being covered in soot having never cleaned them with more than shampoo in 2 years, and they looked great. It was also quite easy, compared to wire wool and Autosol
