Hey, new to this and already have a problem!
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:52:43 pm »
Hey, im new to this site so at the same time as explaining who i am im going to ask if anybody can solve my problem!

Im a 19 year old boy who drives a MK5 1.6fsi GTI REPLICA for insurance purposes, last thursday i had it lowered on coilovers. Coincidence or not, my power steering has now gone :/ i have a red steering wheel shown up on the dash! Any of you people know what the problem may be or how i could solve it?

Thanks alot, Joe.

I have seen that before, not sure if this will sort it, but with the engine on, turn the wheel to full lock left, then full lock right.

Al

I think that trick only works if the warning light is Yellow not Red (i.e like when you change the steering wheel) ?

As the power steering pump is electric (not hydraulic), I would first check to make sure it's power connector hasn't been disturbed (which it shouldn't have). If it's on OK, see if there's someone near you with VAG COM and get the car scanned, that should revael all.

Where abouts are you based ?

had this on my ED30 - red warning light - just about managed to drive it to the indy dealers I bought it from  4 weeks later it was picked up by VW who put a new rack in apparently about £1200 worth and 15 hours to fit - at main dealers prices !!!!

Luckily VW did it all at their cost even though it was over 3 years old and didn't have a VW warrenty - maybe they know that there is a problem with steering racks??

Hope you get yours sorted
