New guy - in a pickle - MK5 GTI or MK4 R32
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:02:42 pm »
Hi all. As above really. At first i was after an R32 and ive been doing research and stuff and found that they attract unwanted attention, very thirsty, expensive to repair and im not so sure.

I am also looking at MK5 GTIs as i have a MK4 at the mo and its been brilliant.

It makes sense to get a MK5 GTI over an R32 but i still want an R32 as they have 4wd as well as nice looking and nippy :)

What do you guys think to the R32? One of the main things is the mpg which is about 20 ISH.
Whats the mpg on GTIs here? ofcourse, driven reservidly.

thanks
Ben

As always mpg depends on how heavy your right foot is. On a 13 mile journey, I got 25mpg in traffic on the way there, and 32mpg on the way back (mix of motorway and A-roads).

If you can afford the fuel and road tax prices, then go for it. I do like the look of the R32 and a few forumites have changed their GTI rears to match the R32 look.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I didn't think Mk4 .:R32's attracted the same road tax as they are pre March '06.

As Stealth says if you can afford it the .:R32 if not then GTI.

Yup, £260 for mk4. I was hoping they would scrap that little loophole in the budget. That'd stop the mk4 boys taking the mick on r32oc!

I was in the boat as you theroxbury, deciding between an R32 and an Edition 30. I've decided to go for the GTi as I think you get more for your money plus it has (I think) more potential if you want to fiddle with it due to being a turbo.

Was mainly interested in the R32 because of it's 4WD as my current car (a Z4 Coupe which I'm currently selling to fund the GTi) was pretty much useless in the snow we had earlier this year, being RWD, and i didn't want a repeat of that. I think the GTi will at least be better in weather like that than the BMW since it's FWD. My girlfriend's wee VW Fox was fine - much better than the Z4.
