GT FSi Running Issues? Throttle Body? Coil Pack?
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:50:40 pm »
Hi,

I have recently got a Mk5 2.0 GT FSi, and love it. Only thing is it has started this strange issue when driving on long journeys? It only seems to do it if we have been doing motorway runs, it doesn't do it on round town, short journeys.
It will loose power, EPC light comes on, along with traction control light, and limits to 2000 rpm. Once stopped, it still ticks over, but sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders, and its very juddery. Switch it off, and leave it for 5 minutes, start it up again, and it starts and runs like nothing has happened!
It done it twice in a row for the first time today, after a trip down the A13.

Taken it to local (trusted) VW garage and he says everything looks OK (I thought it may be a coil pack) done a few checks on throttle Body and cleaned it too. He thinks it could be this??

Anyone else suffered with this? I have just sold a Scooby that was costing me money, and got a Golf for their toughness and reliability and so far it has a small leak in the water pump (which is being sorted next month) and now this bizarre running issue!! HELP!!

Sounds like your car is going into limp mode.
From your description it may well be a coil pack but you really need a vcds scan to properly identify the fault that will be stored in the ecu.

btw if your car is an 07 or earlier then it may be eligible for free replacement coil packs from VW.

Its a 54 plate. Tell me more about this coilpack replacement. Would any VW dealer be able to tell me if its already had it done? It looks like two coilpacks may have been replaced, but only because two look newer than the other two??

How do I go about getting a VCDS scan? Sorry for all the questions, but this one has been stumped!!

Ring your local VW dealer service dept and ask if your car on the recall quoting the recall number 28F5 if they say they've not hear of it.   I would have thought that a 54 plate would be.

You need to find someone close to you with a vcds who would be willing to scan the car for you (vw can do it but they'll charge you a diagnostic fee).

hi mate i had  similar symptoms on my car a year or so ago. mine was missing on pot 3 even after new plugs and swapping the coils, but it would only do this after an hour so of driving.    after pulling most my hair out and talking to my local vag guy we put a new injector in and all was solved.  :happy2:

yours could be something else so you could do with logging the car for missfires, then swap the plugs and coils around to see if the missfire follows to different cylinders and taking it from there
Still Here!

Thanks guys for your help! I am going to call VW today and hopefully it's "on the list"!

I really hope I can get this sorted ASAP, as I am gutted that only after 4 wks of ownership its started playing games, but I guess thats what happens when you buy cars, first or second hand!!

I'll let you know what VW say, and go from there.

Right, I called local VW garage, and asked them if my car is part of this recall list. They said it is on "a list" for a check, but would not necessarily get a free replacement. they say they can check them, and see if they do need replacing, but if nothing is obvious, then all they can do is a diagnositic check regarding this limp mode issue.

Now, even though, when they do it, its not actually doing this limp mode thing at the time, would it still show up? I mean does the ECU store issues like this, that a diagnostic would pick up?

After owning a Scooby, and going through this time and time again, I fear it won;t be a simple issue, thats cheap to solve!!!  :scared:

If the EPC light came on then a fault code would be stored in the ecu.

As for coil packs, that seems the standard VW response till they actually look at the version of coil pack that you have installed. The version is on the coil pack itself.

Yep the EPC light defo came on, everytime! So the version of the pack is on the actually sticker on the top. Do you know what version it should be or shouldn't be?
Sorry for the dump questions!!  :stupid:

You have to disconnect the harness from the coil pack. This exposes a part of the coil pack that has the vw part number on raised lettering. At the end of the part number there is a letter. This is the revision number.

My 06 car had B version coil packs. The latest version is F.

Thanks again for all your help!! I will have a little look tonight. I am going to get it booked in with VW this week to get them to check the coil pack, and then go from there. I hope this is a simple fix, and nothing thats going to cost an arm, a leg and maybe a kidney too  :surprised:

Thanks again for all your help!
