I can't seem to update the maps on RNS...
« on: March 27, 2011, 04:50:31 pm »
Hey folks, I am really having more trouble than I should with updating the maps on my RNS510.

I have the V6 maps, but when trying the V7 maps, a few issues, one starting with the media used... Changed to Verbatim, and get's further...

BUT

Anyway, if I put the DVD in the car with the ignition off, it comes up something about continue / exit, so you press continue... Then please wait is displayed for about 10 mins, and it asks about using maps temporarily or save.

So I press save.

I left it, came back to the car, radio was off, I turned it on and it starts asking for the navigation dvd, but nothing actually happens.

I basically have wiped my V6 maps off lol, and it only works/brings up a map if I put the V7 disc in, but then it just runs off the disc! However, If I press eject, it says it is transferring maps and to

"EJECT" "NOTIFY" or "CANCEL"

And a progress bar comes along... Anyway, I went for a drive, got home, and it was halfway through the bar, so I just turned the ignition off, but left the keys in the car as it seems when turning the radio off it just resets its progress.

... Lo and behold, go back to the car, radio is off and maps are not copied across.

Does this mean I literally have to just drive around for about an hour, whilst that progress bar is up? And keep driving until the bar reaches the end? Then finally eject the disc and thats that? As it appears it does not work any other way?

Firmware is 2760

Thanks :)

Yes the maps are not like firmware. It will stop transferring if the voltage drops below a certain level. It also won't keep the car from shutting down.

It takes about 50-60 mins for the map data to transfer so just go on a drive for an hour or so and you should be fine.

Just as a side note I have seen some cars take a couple of hours so just check it periodically.

Will do mate, I got it past halfway, took about 25 mins, but stupidly turned engine off, I should have just driven round for another half hour

Yeah I had a similar issue too. As above, ignition needs to be on for 1hr. I tried it with the ignition on but the car not started and it was copying fine. Then started the car up and it had to start all over again.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

When I did mine the other day, I left the disc in for a day or two with normal driving and just left it to copy in the background...seemed to do the trick!
