Could not believe 1t ,  booked in a vewing for a GTI from a  so called car dealer 120miles north of me .  set out early this morning , dealer did state for me to contact him when we left to go up .  kept trying to get through to him , but it took an hour for him to answer .   we confirmed we were 60% there , when he dropped the bomb shell , the car is a CAT D repair .

Questioned him what has been repaired to the car .  He replyed , just a rear bumper i said surely it would not be a CAST D for a bumber  and that I thought it must be damage to the tune of the cars value .  it was at this point he cut me off .

I see the car is still advertised and still no mention of the repairs, why did he not explain this during my conversations Saturday with him .  is there a law against this sort of practice .

Turned round and went back home in the end .

It can be what ever category the insurance deems it uneconomical to repair, if it was stolen recovered or just a very light prang then the insurance can put a Cat D on it. Most Cat D's are usually nothing wrong with them but worth checking any documents they may have and don't forget it will affect resale value.

The Cat D cars are often accident damaged (some quite heavy) but where they are still economical to repair.  Cat C cars are more heavily damaged where the insurance company have determined them as uneconomical to repair.  Cat X is where there is often very little damage and usually includes stolen recovered cars.

IMO Cat D (and X) are okay to buy, but the price must be substanially less than the book price and I would have to know and have checked the repair reasons and history.  Also, to be aware, there almost certainly will be problems part exchanging such a car at a garage.

So technically any car that has been "damaged" however slight and has had a claim through an insurance company could be considered a CAT-D?

Would an HPI tell you that it was a cat d?

A friend of mine had his car stolen, they didn't find it (was locked away in some council estate garage), his insurance paid out for the car, then about a month later the police recovered the car, the only damage was a scuffed alloy - I believe this is now a CAT d

Conversely I bought a CAT D Lotus Elise which was quite heavily damaged and took a lot to repair - You just never know.

People do it for a living and try to do it on the cheap so repairs are often sub standard.
