Phone Prep - Not bluetooth this time!
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:19:41 pm »
Hi

I have been searching around for a Mk5 GTI to buy and have seen a couple of cars with what seems to be a hardwired phone prep... after searching around I believe it to be a factory option but cannot find any information about it (everyone talks about bluetooth instead!)

Does anyone have information about this?  How does it work?  I guess only a specific model of phone will work with it right?

its whats termed as the premium phone kit, and uses the nokia rsap controller you can get cradles to go on the dash mount which will charge and provide external aerial support for the phone.  I believe the kit also has bluetooth mode but again will require the phone to support rsap protocol for full phone book functionailty, and you can get a remote touch screen device to replace the cradle to allow control.

One thing I dont get from your pictures below is how that car is able to control the dialling etc as it doesnt have highline dash for the phone book integration or MFSW to receive or hang up calls.

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.

Very interesting point, do you think this may have been retro-fitted to the car at some point then?

Im not sure as I havent had the experience with this kit so it might have been designed to use the phone itself my expectation would be that having the phone kit specced from new would have provided the highline computer as standard to display the info and phone book, this is the case with Leon's.

You will have to wait for someone else to come along with a fuller answer im afraid but if you look up search premium bleutooth you might find some more info.

I had this kit installed in my car when I bought it. I have since removed it and replaced it with the Skoda Bluetooth kit.

I have MFSW and Highline so was able to control that kit through them. You can just press the phone buttons if you don't have them though.

You need a specific adapter for your phone which I don't think they make anymore. When I got my car the newest Nokia adapter they did was for a 6230i!! I have seen that they do a Bluetooth adapter now which fits onto that cradle

Can anyone provide a link to this touch screen adapter?  As my understanding is that it won't work with the pre-06 factory installation as pictured above (which I too have with MFD2, highline and MFSW).

Cheers,

Steve

I've got the same as you and looked into this before and the adaptor doesn't work with our pre-06 installations. I was thinking about swapping the pre-06 cradle with a post 06 cradle (so I could use the touch screen/bluetooth adaptor) but after talking to a couple dealers I gave up as they were useless.

I know what you mean, it's very frustrating to have a feature that works really well - just not with any modern phone!

I too looked briefly into changing the cradle but from what I could see, there are a differing number of wires in the two units.  If we could crack this it would help many other owners no doubt!  Failing that I'm going to replace the glovebox surround to remove the bracket and get rid of the resultant hole and then hide the wiring behind...

The part replacing the surround is pretty cheap - I'm sure I read it in another thread on here - £35 comes to mind. Fitting it doesn't look like it will be too horrific.

No, I agree.  Looks pretty simple and I'm fairly handy anyway.  Just wish there was a simple answer to upgrading the already installed kit!

Wish there was too - seems a shame to waste the steering wheel controls, etc. Could get a replacement bluetooth unit wired in to them but it's probably £200+

The Skoda Bluetooth kit I replaced mine with makes use of the steering wheel controls & the Highline display. Instead of using the phone symbol button you make & end calls by pressing the 'OK' button. It also uses the same mic up in the interior light cluster. Control unit goes under the drivers seat so just need to run the cabling to the stereo & up to the mic

Sounds ideal - can I ask how much?

x2!  Part numbers would be great too if you have them.
