RNS 510 version B or C??
« on: March 29, 2011, 05:03:32 pm »
Hi all,

Its my first post on here so be gentle, lol.

I have a RCD300 head unit fitted on my golf and wanted to change it for something better. After looking around on various sites/forums I've decided to go with a RNS510. I've been quoted £600 supply and fit from one company for a LCD VERSION B - is this worth it? The reason I ask is that I have a guy at work who sold his GTI and removed the head unit, his head unit is a RNS510 LED version C and he wants £550 for it. I can't fit  it myself and there is no-one local to me that can fit - the closest and cheapest to me would be manchester! Which option should I go for and is there anyone local to me that can help fit it should I choose the LED version?
I'm in birmingham and can travel anywhere within the midlands.

Thanks

Go for the LED one. Much better screen and better upgradeability looking to the future.

Theres plenty of people who can help - im sure one of them will see your question!

Thanks. Would I have to upgrade the CAN gateway? I've got a 2007 56 plate.

Quite possibly. Youll need it scanned to check the gateway version

Ok. There's so much conflicting info available out there regarding the RNS510 CAN gateway - I've read that if you buy version B you need to replace the gateway but if you buy the LED version C you don't need to replace it. I've also read that you need to replace the gateway regardless if its version B or C. Confused......... :scared:

It's regardless. Both are gen 3 head units needing newer can bus or the no battery drain firmware though that doesn't work all the time

My CAN Gateway is 1K0 907 530K

Will that be ok to fit a RNS510 b or c without any battery drain issues

Anyone?

I had a K and it "appeared" to be ok

I upgraded it anyway as I want to get OPS working (optical parking sensors)  :signLOL:

Hi Richard
Yes I think you will be ok with the K version you have

now start looking for one, they are worth it. And your old unit and ipod adaptor has some resale value

I got mine from Darren (mortygttdi)

The unit is nothing to do with wether it drains the battery or not it's the firmware.

You can fit any version RNS but if it has 266X firmware or higher you need (to 100% guarantee no battery drain) an L revision or higher gateway. Some K revisions will also work but it is hit and miss. Mine works fine and i know other cars that do. I haven't been able to tie it down to a build date of car but my Car is a Mar 2007 with a K revison and it works. I don't know of a car newer than this that suffers with battery drain (that's not to say there isn't any)

Generally a "C" version will have 268X firmware or higher.

B Version will have anything from 110X and higher.

So in short:

C Revision - replace gateway as it will be 268X or higher

B Revison - replace only if it has 266X or higher firmware.

As your car is a 2007 56 plate you may be lucky and have a K Revison that works but not way of telling till you try.
