Question about RNS-510, bluetooth and Voice control
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:21:49 pm »
Guys, sorry to ask this again, but I don't think I got a response to my last post.

Tomorrow, the Golf is going and I'm picking up my new Scirocco. One of the first things I'll be doing is removing the standard RCD-510 and replacing it with my RNS-510 Nav unit. I've ordered the car with the factory bluetooth unit, but as mentioned with the standard RCD-510 (albeit Dynaudio). So i'll have a microphone already installed in the overhead console, but it's my understanding as there is no Nav in the car from the factory, that it ONLY goes to the bluetooth unit under the seat (like my crap sketch below) completely bypassing the back of the RNS.

It's my understanding (although please correct me if I am wrong), that to get the voice control to work (apart from a bit of VCDS coding), I need to feed the mic into the back of the RNS, then out to the bluetooth unit ? (like the crap 2nd picture below).

My question is, will the factory installed microphone cable have the takes offs (connectors) already there to plug straight into the back of the RNS (say near the A-Pillar), or will it ONLY go to the bluetooth unit with no spurs. In that case, is it best to try and modify the existing cable, or replace it completely with a Kufatec "voice control" cable assembly.

Finally, as my unit is currently running Version 1300 firware (which as I understand it doesn't support voice control), I obviously need to update it. Would it be the 2760 firmware that vRS Carl put a link to in his sticky above ?

Cheers in advance chaps.

Andrew

Hello mate 2760 firmware works with voice control, I was also running 1300 and moved to 2760 to activate.  As for the wiring my kit was already converted by the person on here I bought it off but teh split of the wires was up in the head lining as the mic unit has a little trailing wire with twin plug connector that sits up in the headlining by the centre console this seems to be the desired location to take the microphone feed off.

Personally I would be tempted with the Kufatec lead but thats because everytime I try and remove pins from blocks I always break them!

No idea but some excellent diagrams.  :congrats:

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Cheers for the reply Rich. You might be right. The Kufatec cable might be the best option. Just didn't want to splash out on it if the cables were already in the car and I just needed to plug them in.

Guess I'll find out in the next few days.

Thanks Lee,

I had already spotted that and contact Hafeez. He very kindly sent me some detailed photos of the loom he has and it just looks like a single connection at each end (i.e. from the mic to the RNS only). there are not any additional bypass connectors fitted.

I guess this one is for cars that don't have bluetooth fitted as well as voice control ?

It says not suitable for phones with factory bluetooth as I believe the voice control uses the same mic in pins as the phone system.  I guess you just need two wires running from the mic connector in the head liner to the mic terminals on the phone input on the back of the stereo, wrap it in furry tape to stop it causing knocking noise.

Andrew basically you would need to take the wires from the bluetooth module and take them to the RNS510 like your rather fantastic diagram :happy2: then 2 more wires from the RNS back to the BT module.

Theres no special wires, I have a spare microphone wiring loom you can have and if you can wait till Monday morning I can even come over and help you sort it out, I'm in Rochdale?

Darren, knew you would come to the rescue

Your offer is very tempting, especially as I'm off work on Monday. Trouble is, it's the wife's (Ange's) birthday, and I did agree to take her out. Hmmm, I'll have a chat with her and let you know buddy  :happy2:

I know this topic is quite old, but did you manage to cut the mic lead and wire it up like your diagram??
